62 Comet engine swap. Got a question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Dec 30, 2011.

  1. We are doing a engine swap in my sons 62 Comet. We are replacing the exististing 144 with a 170 from a 67 Falcon. My problem is we needed to use the fuel pump from the 62 engine since it has the vaccum setup for the wipers. On the base of the carb thier is only 1 vaccum port. On the 170 it is used for the PCV, on the 144 it was for the wipers. Basically I am short 1 Vac port. I could T off it but I dont think it would be enough to operate the wipers. Or, at each end of the intake is a freeze plug. I could pop one out and drill it for Vac fitting Vac and hook up the PCV to that.Or I could find a meaty part of the intake and tap it for a fitting. Any ideas? Thanks, Todd

The guys at Melvin's Classic Ford Parts have a electric wiper conversion kit for the 60-62 Falcon, call them to check fitment on your Comet. They are in Conyers GA., 770-761-6800. This kit would be a great saftey upgrade anyway, if you have ever driven anything with vac. wipers you know what I mean.

Go with the electric kit and keep the later fuel pump. I've driven many an early Falcon/Comet and the vac wipers just suck.

  4. Yea, I thought of the electric conversion but the best price I have found is $210.Just not in the budget right now. The vac wipers did work pretty well.

In addition to tapping into a meaty part f the manifold for a vac fitting, you might want to consider adding a vacuum reservoir to stabilize the wiper operation.....a lot of things could be used for that. Any small tank with curved walls would work (need a check valve, though). A trip to your local salvage yard could easily yield one. any number of cars, even with electric wipers, used them because, I think, a lot of the A/C & htr controls were vacuum operated and the reservoirs prevented them from changing position with changes in throttle.
