Dried up pearl remedies?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Dec 31, 2011.

  1. The other day I opened up the red jar of pearl. An unfortunately.. it's dried up. So I shook a couple of small pieces into a different jar, with lacquer thinner. I was hoping it would soften back up. The big piece is not really affected, as I shake & mix the jar around. I did that just a couple days ago, and it isn't doing anything. I am curious to know what they used, or rather what it was that dried up & out!? My question.. can it be saved you think?

it looks like that jar has been used to mix paint in, not just a jar of pearl. do you mean pearl paint dried up?

  3. It's from the early 60's.. This is the only one that dried up.

Next time after using any paint clean the lip of the jar and inside the lid tighten the lid and store upside down. With all the gunk on your jar it mostly had a leek and dried up. :D

  5. Question is, can it be saved? I just thought I'd ask..

you might try adding a little retarder and letting it sit for a few days . I sure would'nt just throw it out . Good luck .

id add some clear to it, no hardner, and hopefully it will bond with it and be sprayable

I used up my last bottle of pearl long ago:(....

I think the easiest way for you to re-liquefy it would be to put all those bottles in a box and send them to me:)

As an alternative, I think I'd add a little clear and just let the affected bottle sit for a while. I'm pretty sure it'll soften up.

    It might take a while.....

  9. Thanks, I will try the clear idea.

    Hey,

You might try filling the jar to the top with acetone, and replacing the lid. Lacquer thinner is made from acetone and other solvents, but acetone is a hotter solvent. If this doesn't break down the dried Murano, you might try scraping the dried film from the jar, and grinding the chips to a powder-probably more trouble than it's worth! In early times, paint was made from dried pigments mixed with a binder(usually an oil) and solvent as a vehicle.

Your killing me with all these pictures of this Murano, and all this talk of spraying lacquer- it's like lookin' at a photo album of old family/friends who'ved passed. Just go look at the photos of Larry Watson's mixing bench in one of Rikster's posts for some more photos.

Whyle it's true that today's urethanes and I guess "The Treehugger Kool-Aid'' paints being used by builders far out last the old lacquers & enamels, I don't think the average guy knows what a deal he's cut with the devil, long term health wise!

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, what I did was scoop out the pearl I wanted to us then put it in un reduced un hardened clear not a lot maybe 2 or 3 onces. then just started working the 2 together with a clean cut in half width paint stick. as long as it not hard as a rock it will come back. Don't pour any lacquer or Poly paint into the jar if you do that is the only type of paint you will be able to use with the rest later. No thinners, reducers or acetone it will just dry it out faster & become total useless.

  12. carbuilder is absolutly rite. As a painter for over 40+ years I have shot it all. carbuilders post is spot on. Mix what you need and dont mess up the rest with any one product. Great advice given there carbuilder....

Wow you two dating? That's alot of compliments for somebody who said what I said 5 posts ago...

  14. Unfortunately, it is dried solid. But the small pieces did break down, in the lacquer thinner. So when it's time, I will mix it with the un-cut urethane. Thanks guys.. I appreciate knowledge

I doubt that the laquers and enamels did a lot for the users health either. They have systems available to save painters lungs if they will use them.

i pm'ed a few people and thanks for the help. My purple is dried up but it still suspened in liquid which is quite weird. i tried to strain it but i still get specks on my test panel.. I'm starting to think my murano is worthless to use... my gold and silver jars are in excellent condition.. i really want to use this purple any more hints as to what i can do?

  19. Try just taking what you need & add acetone then grind it up with a spoon or old pushrod. You need to break it up justsoaking will only soften it to a point. Worked for me on a silver pearl that had sat for some years & had dried out.
