Im running a 1991 305.1977 350 turbo tranny and a 2001 chevy blazer rear axel. It's tackin roughly 4 grand at 50 mph.should I change the rear gears or should I get a 700 r .just don't know. Any ideas.

    ^^^^ Yes x 2. I run a 700R behind my 305 and with 3.5:1 rear end and 235:75:15 tyres it turns 2K rpm at 60mph.

  4. You either have *very* low gears or you are not in high gear. Your linkage adjusted correctly? Even my old V8 Vega with 4.10 gears and no OD, with 14 inch wheels and tires in the stock wheelwells, would turn 3500 rpm at 55. To be turning 4000 at 50? You have something wrong, either your tach is messed up, or you have some strange non-factory rear gears in that S-10 rearend. I'm going to guess your S-10 rear should be around 3.73 gears if stock.

    A 700R4 is a good choice though.

See if you can get better than "tackin roughly 4 grand" cause 3200 and 4000 might sound the same, but are actually waaay diffrent. Time your car between mile markers to get you at 60mph in 60 seconds then, look at the tach.

Most Blazers come with a 3.73 or 4.11 rear and with a 28 inch tall tire you might see about 2700 with the 3.73 or 2900 with the 4.11 @60mph.

    Good luck, -Abone.

The rear is from a 2001 4x4 blazer and no .I am 100% sure I am in third gear and you don't need to look at the tach you can listen and hear im taching high too high .thing is its a new tranny and the rear is welded for my setup I just thought the easier route may be changing the rear gears but I think they need to be shimmed in. I have no experience with that. It may be a cheaper way to fix this. Also my tranny is a long tail I would also have to get a new drivahaft if I changed the tranny

search here for the ways to figure out what gear ratio you have. no expert but, there is a S10/Blazer 4:56 ratio - glove box code HC4. one option is to change out the complete rearend. also, do a search here and maybe online for info on the dimensions of a 350 and 700R4. you may be closer to a 700 than you think. there should be info here about upgrading. no matter what, you need to know the rear gear ratio. all of your options will take time, parts and $$. but, will cost more if you over rev your motor.

Lots of S10 rears came with 4:10s, believe it was stock with the 4cylinder 5 speed 2wd trucks. I have one of those rears in my buick and run a 700r4, works great.

Works out to around 6.50/1 gear ratio.
    Something isn't right.
    Larry T

    Bowling's Vehicle RPM Calculator
    Input Parameters Are the Following:
    Differential Gear = 6.50 to 1
    Transmission Gear = 1.00 to 1
    Tire Diameter (Inches) = 28.00
    Vechicle MPH = 50
    Computation Results:
    Computed Engine RPM is 3902

Larry's numbers are just what I came up with too. Something is really not right. There is no way you can be cranking 4000 at 50 mph unless you are running stump pulling gears. I am running 4;30's with no overdrive and I only tach 3000 at 60 mph.

You either need a new tach or you are running lawn mower tires. :D Or, you started your New Years celebrating way too early.

I ran 3000 rpm at 60mph in my 4.10 geared Duster.
Commenting on your God statement would go against HAMB policy, so I'll just say you're an idiot.

Im personally no fan of 700r's and would be easier to swap rear end gear... why tacking out at 4k?

Built properly, there is not a problem with the 700R4. Their bad reputation us undeserved.

It can't be running at 4k. The math is not there. Larry T has demonstrated this. The tachometer is off, and the exhaust is just loud, or it is not in top gear.

I have 6.50:1 gears in my A (which I will be changing to 6.00:1), and am running 30-1/2" tires. I am, or course, running a 0.50:1 top gear.

Ok I ran it again today I used my GPS to check my speed and I wasn't even doing 50 and I was tachin 4 grand. Ok let's say my tach is screwed. Im telling you this thing is in third gear and its reving high it feels like a quarter mile car there is no way I can run this thing on the highway .I have no clue what the rear gears are but it sreamin also the tires are p 270 15

  20. There are many threads here on how to calculate the rear axle ratio without pulling the back cover. Use the search feature at the top of the page. Remember, if you have a open rear or non-posi, you must hold one of the wheels from turning as you proceed. Second, sounds like your tach might be wired for either a 6 or a 4 cylinder engine. You might want to check that also, TR

Your facts are wrong somewhere. The calc. says you have a 6:5 something gear based on a 27 inch tire. Doubtful. On a personal note your so called attempt at humor is pitiful.

  22. Take the back of off the tach, or take the cup off. Now look for either some small dip switches or actual wires that need to be transfered/moved for the # of cylinders.

  23. All you need to do to determine the ratio is count the driveshaft revolutions vs one axle revolution.

pretty sure 4:56-4:88 is about the lowest gear you can get for that 10 bolt...id put a good tech on it to see for sure what the rpms really are.. yes gears have to be 'shimmed in" aka set up... shpould be pretty easy to find a good 3:00-3:55 gear set for it..have them installed by someone who knows how to do it correctly..

Youve actually got all the info you need to do what you want. They told you how to figure out your rear gear ratio, that somepeople like 700r4s, and some people dont, and that some people dont like 305s ( its all personal preferance) and that its always easier to swap your rearend than a tranny... All comes down to how much time and money you want to spend... And i guess you really are trying to make everyone mad with your last statement...
Personally i like keeping gm gm, ford ford, mopar mopar, and hondas in a junk yard... What kind of car do you have? Just interested... I can help you get parts for a cut rate if you need anything.

    P.S.... Can i have a beer?
