im ordering a 3in drop axle for my 46 ford truck, from sid at dropped axles and i know its best to put new kingpins in it. how can i tell if i need a standard set or ones that are over sized? this will be my first kingpin set. i just want to make sure i order the right set the first time. is there a stock measurement or something i can do after i get my old spindles off my axle.

    Thanks

I've never had to use oversize ones, just bought the standard set and had the bushings honed to the correct palm press fit and that was that. Don't see any reason why you would need oversized ones unless the bores in the axle are worn badly, and Sid would have known that, I'm sure. To be honest, I didn't even know they made oversized ones.

BTW, there are however two different LENGTHS of kingpins. A shorter one for round back spindles (37-41) and a longer one for the squareback spindles (42-48). Just order accordingly and you will be fine.

To answer your question, both the squareback and roundback pins are .813 diameter.

thanks i just saw in joblot that they sell a standard size and a over sized .010+ i didnt know if that mean the pin was actually over sized or the bushing in the spindle was oversized.

best bet for having them honed is a machine shop?

    thanks for the help

If it were me and I had brass/bronze bushings I'd take them to a machine shop and have them honed. I don't know about the oversize but have seen some spindles where the bushings fit a bit loose due to previous wear.

I agree with Mr48, I just take them to the local machine shop and have them hone them. It takes a hone that indexes on both bushings to get a straight shot, and they only charge about $ 50 locally to install and hone them.

All my axles I send out are standard kingpin size. I offer the service of installing kingpins and reaming king pin bushings.
