OK now ,I did the search thing and came up empty handed. So anyone familiar with reparing pot metal ? What I have is 41 study headlight doors with some pitting of sort that I think can be re-chromed. However one has a fairly big crack in and around the headlight ring. I remember way back hearing of a welding rod that was used to weld alum/potmetal with a gas torch any ideas or info welcomed .thanks...
Bring it right to your chromer and see what they suggest. Don't weld it with an unknown rod if the plating won't stick to it, find that out first. If it's not structurally bad, you might be able to just fill it in with silver solder, after the piece is stripped and blasted clean. Worst case scenario is you bondo up the piece to build some thickness, take it to a foundry and have them cast you a new one out of silicon bronze with air-set sand casting.
I think this is the one you saw -- http://www.muggyweld.com/?view=home I've got some but have not tried them yet.
Muggy weld works and I can plate it if I have to, but if you do it wrong (too hot) you can destroy your headlight door. Pot metal gives no real warning before melting in spectacular fashion. I recommend sending it to us and we will fix it beautifully. If you really want to DIY it, try it on some junk pot metal first. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=526437&highlight=pot+metal+repair I searched "pot metal repair" and this was on the bottom of the 1st page of search results. I know there are more that I have responded to in the past, but I only did the one search.
