I'm new to flatheads so please excuse me if this is a dumb question. Bought a rebuilt '37 flattie from a reputable shop. They advised me to retorque the head bolts after we had it running. Found one that had a stripped nut on the passenger side at the back end of the block. The stud seemed too short or driven to far in. We had to cut the nut off and try with a new nut. Same thing happened so we figure the stud is bad. We pulled the stud out and water came out the hole. Is that normal or did the builder crank the stud through the metal into a water port? If it's normal, I'll just replace the stud. If it's not, someone's got some 'splainin' to do. Thanks for any explanation.
Yes and the fact that the stud came out is a good thing. Studs can be a royal pain to remove. You will have to put sealer on the threads when reinstalling the stud.
Yes the studs go into water jackets.. Yes, they need to be retorqued after it cools.. Be sure to use good thread sealer before reinstalling... Napa sells a good thread sealer.. Be sure when you install the stud not to over tighten in block... They should just be tightened till the stud shoulder contacts the block.. What #'s are you torquing them to?
The guy I bought my studs from in Detroit.. His name is like Ray Naceiewicz from the Ford Barn recommended me to use napa thread sealer..made by permatex Comes in a tube.. You'll get 5-6 different answers on this.. I've also used Teflon pipe dope in the past.. I'd stick with napa sealer..
Perfect, make sure the threads are clean and dry before using. I like to clean them with a little laquer thinner on a cotton swab or clean small bristle brush better yet. Then allow to air dry. Prep the threads on the stud the same way. TR
Just wanted to close this thread by thanking all of you that responded. The HAMB is an awesome place for sure. We got a new stud in place and everything cinched up fine. Thanks again for the help. Aloha
