I didn't want to post this until copies of the new issue of The Rodders Journal (#53) started shipping out to subscribers and newstands, but I think it's safe to talk about it now.

Both the Texas Playboy I built for Steve Ernst and Floyd Williams' Dave Lane built '32 Roadster are featured in a super cool "double feature" article written by Pat Ganahl. It compares and contrasts a couple of cars that are each built in a specific style, only seperated by a few years in era. I built the Texas Playboy as if it could have been completed in 1959, whereas Floyd's roadster is decidedly more '60s style.

Here's a sneak peak of the article. (Please excuse my half-assed photo of the magazine...I couldn't bring myself to screw it up to scan it properly.)

And here are a couple of behind-the-scenes spy photos I took during Steve Coonan's photoshoot.

    Coonan shooting the Fatlucky's interior:

Floyd's bitchin' roadster is so low, they had to use 2x4s to get it over the abrupt drop into the shoot location. Pictured left to right are Jon Wright (the chromer), Ray from the Hot Rod Garage in Maryland, Floyd in his roadster, and builder Dave Lane:

    Steve getting set up:

Coonan picked this really cool spot to shoot the cars just off of 6th street in Austin:

I can't even express how happy I am over the whole thing. It was almost surreal to have a car that I built in my shop being shot for the greatest hot rod magazine ever. Coonan is a master of his craft, and Ganahl is one of the best writers to ever write about hot rods and customs.

If you haven't seen it, I did a pretty extensive post on the building of the Texas Playboy early last year. Here's a link:

It's my understanding that it is really hard to get a black '32 Roadster in The Rodder's Journal, so I think that makes it even more special to me. And I don't think I'd be able to do what I do without the HAMB, so I'd like to thank Ryan and all the members for all the support over the last 10+ years.

Very cool Brian, you should consider building rods for a living, I think you'd be good at it.

WOW! Congrats. Gotta pick that up! Figured the Playboy would end up in TRJ at some point.

Congrats! Looking forward to reading the article. FWIW, the "Texas Playboy" is probably my favorite deuce roadster ever; never thought I'd say that about a black car!

Just read it the other day. 7 years as a one man Hot Rod shop (in this economy) and getting featured in the best magazine the publishing world has to offer is a testament to your skill and artistry. Congrats.

  13. Congrats to you as well as Dave. Both cars are beautiful. My first thought when I saw Steve perched on his camera case, Oh my, I hope he doesn't slip!! Nice to see Ray giving props to the Jalopyrama Show with his tee. Great stuff. Kudos to all involved...............Don.

I got the issue and that was the first article I read in the magazine. Great cars and great write up by Pat. Congratulations!

BTW, I was surprised by the comment that implied they had not heard of the 40 inner trim rings before...

Yes you could make a Small Fortune building Cars for a Living,But you gotta start with a Big Fortune ( most Shop owners will agree )

Excellent Roadsters, Both of them !

Congratulations Brian; that is a real big deal to have the Texas Play Boy featured in RJ. As you know it is one of my favorite roadsters and I picked it for the "ACME LIKES IT" award at the 2011 Lone Star Round Up.

    Great Job!
