Uhaul car trailer, good or bad idea?

I've always used a u-haul car trailer and never had any issues with them. Furthest I've gone is 550 miles each way with one. I wouldn't go further than that since I'd rather have a car shipped due to being over 10 hours each way trip. Currently having a vehicle transported from Washington State to where I reside in Texas. Bad part about this transporter is after the main folks I contacted turned around and farmed the delivery to another company, I realized that the company "Mobile Transport" has too many complaints and got knocked out of the BBB ratings. Now what was suppose to be a week delivery has turned into almost a month. I barely got a call a couple hours ago from Mobile Transport that the vehicle is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow evening. I'm surprised AAA Transport who I first went with didn't notify me that the car should be here. Nothing but fkn headaches compared to other car carriers I've used.

I guess this is who I'll be contacting next and see what service they offer.

I say keep it in storage till the weathers nice then do a roadtrip in the spring.

  4. I was thinking the same thing. You can get rolls of packers wrap (basically saran wrap used to wrap pallets and skids). One or two rolls would probably cover the whole car a few times over... enough to protect the paint I'd think.

I hauled my 56 F100 5,000 miles from Anchorage, AK to Longview, TX 120 miles east of Dallas with one of those trailers behind a 26' truck. Worked well. 26' U-haul only had minor problems with coolant hose and steering pump.

I've had to climb out the window of every car I've ever put on a U Haul trailer.

That in itself is a reason to pay a pro.

Why didn't you just fold down the left fender? They are hinged for that reason!

If you are gong to spend a lot of money on a rental trailer, consider buying one. I bought my car trailer 25 years ago and it was one of my best purchases. I use it all of the time.

Buy a used trailer and prep it properly for the trip. If you can't keep it, you'll make your money back.

Well.. This is the quote I'd have to go with..
I was first thinking of the idea of shrinkwrapping it once it was on the trailer..
Also, U-Haul will likely not allow you to put that car on the trailer as they will say it's too heavy or too big. Yes--I lied when I put the '41 Ford coupe on the trailer as I told U-Haul I was hauling a '61 Vw Bug.. Sorta lighter I guess. :)
Obviously you've already bit the bullet--but the car will be cared for.
I will tell you that the u-haul trailer rental wasn't cheap--but they will give you it for 8 days of travel time.. If you have a blowout or something else happens with the trailer, they come out and rescue ASAP.
I experienced all the worst that could happen on my trip from California to Chicago this past October--So, I can speak from experience..

Well the Uhaul trip has been made! From Denver to Edmonton in 30 hrs. We left the Belair at a friends place to be picked up this week hopefully, and transported in a covered carrier.
As it turns out we're happy to have made that decision in the end. It would have been brutal to have towed it ourselves.

We left Denver early and by the time we hit Ft. Collins the winds had picked up to 50+ mph, throwing sand and tumble weeds at us continuously. The wind picked up even more when we hit Wyoming! By the time we reached Douglas WYO, a blizzard with white out conditions forced us to take shelter at little resturant attached to a sinclairs gas station. They were very friendly and had the biggest pancakes I' ve ever tried eating. I didn't even get close to finishing.

The storm blew over quickly but the roads were nothing but ice. It was slow going and a big wreck on the interstate delayed our progress. It wasn't until Montana that the roads cleared. Conditions in Montana were great for driving so we made it to Great Falls at 10pm and welcomed in New Years at the Comfort Inn. (Not that Comfortable!)

Next morning made to Sweetgrass border crossing, We spent about 3.5 hrs there dotting the i's and crossing the T's before we could move on. We were treated good by both customs agencies.

The trip went well for the last 7 hrs but I have to say that the drive through Calgary to the other side of Red Deer was crazy. I swear that the drivers on Calgarys deerfoot trail are wacked. I can't believe hhow many cars travelling at high speeds there were. We were the slow pokes doing 70 mph in a 26 ft uhaul.

In the end we made it home safe and we were more than a liitle glad to have decided not to try the towing ourselves!

Hauled both my cars to Ohio From CT using Ryder trucks and trailers.
The trailers were like new and towed well behind there trucks.
The trucks were low in theback and the trailers sat higher, I covered the windshield and front of hood with old flannel sheets pulled tight and closed in the door frame and the hood with the sheet pulled tight and closed the hood.
Covered anything else with 2" wide blue masking tape 2 layers thick.
560 miles not a mark anywhere, but that was not in the winter!
    Good Luck!

Buy a good used enclosed trailer, use it, sell it for what you paid. Free haul!
    It worked for me!
