Heading to Charleston, SC next week for work wondering what are some spots to hit. Good BBQ, southern food, bars, seafood, or HAMB related stuff.

We do a hot rod lunch in North Charleston Saturday at 11:30, but other than that, not much hot rod related.

All the normal tourist stuff is downtown...Battery park, the Hundley submarine, the Aquarium, bars, BBQ etc. There is all kinds of other stuff too, Middleton place, plantations, yada, yada. Pick up any of the tourist flyer things and it will have all the info you need.

Plus, if you like the ocean, we have a really neat one of them.. Should be warm enough to take a dip.

Holler if you need anything, -Abone.

Hyman's Seafood is where I go to eat seafood.
    Downtown on Meeting St.

    ( I live 100 miles away from Charleston :D )

The Bar-B-Que place is Thomas Bessingers on Hwy 17 S ... about 3 or 4 miles out of Charleston.

Like flamedAbone said ... The Hot Rod scene is kind of lame in Charleton. Lots of good rodders ... and HAMB members but not much going on gathering wise. I lived in Charleston for many years. I even ride down a few times a year to just eat lunch with the guys.

The carriage tours were given by college student and very informative. I don't know if they do this in the winter but we did a BBQ and Blues cruise that was fantastic. I am ***uming you like Pirates so I would also recommend the The Buccaneer The museum is cool too.

There's a airrcraft carrier and a submarine permanently docked there, can't remember the names of them but the carrier is loaded with aircraft and is open from top to bottom for tours, well worth a visit.

nobody's warned you about the speed limit enforcement on the "Big" (Ravenel) bridge or the ladders, wheelbarrows, lawn mowers and other junk on I-526 between Mt Pleasant and North Charleston; nor the absolutely asinine traffic flow patterns on I-26, 526, the Crosstown and through Mt Pleasant. nobody here uses or pays attention to turn signals, so don't expect people to let you cross lanes or get to an exit if you've missed it. don't leave ANY tools, equipment, etc locked in your truck if you're staying in a motel while you're here. lock it up at the jobsite or carry it into your room. crackheads here will steal pennies out of your truck and bust a 700 dollar windshield to get them. if you're going to party; keep somebody sober on your crew. local constabulary hate DUI with a p***ion bordering insanity and the DA's of every locality LOVE to prosecute. we don't get snow or ice, but we have ****ty roads and they turn slick as eelsnot with a drop of rain.... beware of that.

don't park anywhere on Folly Beach; cops ticket every out of state plate they see there. for that matter; take a cab everywhere downtown or on the islands; even with their inflated fares they're cheaper than tickets and paid parking. we're not Myrtle Beach, yet, but we're getting that bad. every corner has some overpriced tourist trap bar/restaurant and every one of those has a cop watching the parking lot for overly happy customers.

But...if you can get past all that, Charleston is actually a wonderfull place to live with lots of jobs, good weather, and is consistently in the top 20 best citys in America to live. (nice to visit also..)

I work in North Charleston by the Airport so holler if you need anything. Keep an eye out for a flamed Model A sedan and feel free to flag me down.

I liked N. Charleston when we lived there (twenty five years ago) Used to cruise Rivers Avenue and even street race a little out on Remount rd close to Dorchester rd - there was nothing much on it at the time, and it was kinda on the city limits/county line (don't remember which) so the cops were scarce.

Also used to stop at Robert's drive in, home of the SUPER PIG bbq sandwich. We moved back to Tennessee right after hurricane Hugo hit...

you have to hit all of the Bessinger family's BBQ houses..... each one lays claim to a different recipe, and every one of them is good. there's even some Naw Clina vinegar based BBQ around. now that we got what WE call "cold weather", there's "awster roasts" to do... shuck 'em and **** 'em.

and... if you happen to drop your wallet downtown... kick it all the way to North Charleston before you bend over to pick it up. you might get "surprised" by some of our "local color" there.

How is this different than most ANY OTHER PLACE ??

If you drive DUI ... you deserve a DUI ...
If you speed ... you deserve a ticket.

The traffic can be difficult but if you have ever been to Atlanta, Charlotte or Los Angeles ... Charleston traffic is like a " walk in the park ". Rude drivers are everywhere :D :D

Man! Do you like living here at all. I agree we have most of these problems but there is a lot of good here too.

Come to hot rod lunch Abone mentioned. Just started going and it's a good time.

Good bars and things all over to do. Just depends on where you want to venture. Not much car stuff going on during the winter unfortunately. If you want a nice downtown dinner I would suggest Husk, Virginias, or Justines Kitchen. The last two are the southern comfort food variety.

I believe Robert's Drive In is now on Ashley Phosphate Rd.
Stop in and get yourself a BIG ROBERT.

Best BBQ is at Sweatman's in Holly Hill, SC.

I was in Charleston most all of Saturday ... and I suffered no traffic tickets, vandalism or DUI's. :D
But then I go to about any area and any town and do not get that treatment there either.

Charleston was crowed some Saturday ... afterall it was New Years EVE

Went to Hyman's last night great food. Went to Tattooed Moose tonight very cool place and great food as well. Fries are some of the best I have had. Was drinking at the Market Street Saloon last night too. Company AMEX card is a great thing.
