I have this pair of 1951 plates hanging on the wall, I have had them for 16 years, back when I worked at "pick-your-part" in Sun Valley, ca. I took them off an old Nash.
I was thinking about putting them on the chevy, I call Sacramemto and they are clear, yee ha!
so after talking to a guy, that knows a guy, who has a buddiie that works in the DMV and still no stright answer about "year of manufacture" plates for my 54, I get tired of it and just walk into the lincoln hights DMV office, 1951 plates in hand, correct 1954 "tag", and my registration papers. I talked to a nice lady that has no clue what I want to do, but makes it happen.
she ran around the office asking eveyone else what to do and then she did it.

long story short, I got my coo vintage plates assigned to my chevy!

Hey now wait a darn minute. I have relatives who work there (damn hard I might add) What most of us don't know is that they have to put up with a bunch of assholes day in and day out. I wonder where they get the patience.
1/1000th of 1 percent of the stuff they have to do concerns registering old cars and we come in there and get pissed off if they can't find a car that has never been on any computer let alone the last time it was registered was somewhere back in the fifties. So next time you're in a DMV cut 'em some slack. Ever try doing official business in a country other than the U.S.? It gives you a whole new perspective.:) -stick

I've been living in Al. since the early 90's, & they've told me for the past 15 years I HAD to have a TITLE on anything from '76 up. So I made damn sure I had a clear title for the '77 Z car before I bought all those fiberglass parts, installed the V8, roll bar, fuel cell, & harnesses. Then I trailered it to Al. (12 hour round trip - they have to see the VIN) & they said the title wouldn't do me any good that I HAD to have the TAG RECEIPT & BILL OF SALE from the last person in Ga. that had it tagged!!!! Well it hasn't been tagged in Ga. for decades! With the government you're ALWAYS dealing with IDIOTS! (my apologies to the previous poster)
So now I have a car with a lot of time & money in it that I can't drive!!!
Oh yeah, know what they told me to do? Come back to Ga. & have someone FORGE a bill of sale & put the tag in their name THEN sign the car over to me!!!! They actually told me to BREAK THE LAW!!!!

Yes my buddy had a nice lady tell him.."If you go out into the parking lot and look, You might see the previous owner. Get them to sign the offending paper and come right back in" This lady had been there forever and had seen it all. The last time I was there I got a newbe. That's when you have troubles. Anything other than the routine and they are panic city!

These people are just poor working stiffs with bosses and rules that they must follow to keep their job just like you and me. They will help you out most times as long as their ass is covered.

Spend a week on their side of the counter and you'd get a different perspective.

Well what they need to do is stick to the LAW & not make up different "rules" every time you go in there!!! I asked them what had changed - & they said "nothing"! For 15 years I needed nothing but a clear title (which BTW should be good anywhere in any circumstance!); suddenly that's no good & NOTHING has changed??? :( And THEN they tell me to commit FORGERY??? I could spend 15 years in JAIL for following their "rules"! What a bunch of MORONS!!!

On my 23T dirt track car, I built my on frame. When it was done went to the DMV after having it inspected by the H>P and sumbited their paper work. The DMV lady told me I needed a bill of sale for the frame I had built. Long story short one year later I got title after posting bond for a frame I built. I'm sure there . I just have not met any.

Next time, I will go into the parking lot and see if I can find the prior owner.

Most of 'em in Calif. don't know their own regs. I proved to them what they were telling me I needed for my roadster was wrong by showing them a page from their own website. The response I got from a supervisor was, "Well sir, that's a good argument. . ."

Bottom line, I'm driving the car legally on a temp permit without paying the taxes I should've paid. So this moron screwed his own state out of their rightful money because he didn't know his job.

  11. Another Cali DMV Success story...!!!

My friend bought his Dads 40 Ford coupe and wanted to retain the plates his Dad had on the car since NEW but the DMV wouldn't let him since the plates were still in use... (????)!

So I told him to have his name added to the title and then go through the line again and have his Fathers name removed.....!!!!

I had done this in Wisconsin to retain a personalized license plate.

Worked like a champ in Wisconsin and in California...!!!

Texas was really simple. Bought a set of Black 1962 plates off ebay, walked into the tax assesors office (much better than the DPS or DMV!), they ran the numbers, they came up clear, I paid $15 extra bucks to register my car and came out with registration for my car! I get almost as many questions about my plates than I do about the year, interior, etc of my car.

I know California is a bitch to do anything there...good going

I can't believe it, not one mention about your cool buddy that drove your ass to the DMV and waited with you...on his day off I might add! Some friend you are?! - I know, I'm a dick! Besides, the only reason you got anything done was because you flirted with all the clerks!

if they blew up every DMV in NJ..along with anyone who works there......id be more than excited.

most of the time i get my problems "fixed" by just going to another DMV....i LOVE how i get told "it cant be done" at 1 dmv and then im in and out with plates, etc. at another 30 minutes later. its like playing roulette....

Probably the only thing that keeps this country going is that the left hand of the government doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Here in PA, if you want to get it through the DMV then you need to have your state rep run it through for you. Otherwise,it takes months.

When I first moved to Al. 15 years ago they wouldn't give me a tag for a bike that I had in my name - tag & all - for TWELVE years in Ga. I had to go back to Ga. & get a TITLE in my name before they would give me a tag in Al. - now re-read my previous two posts above about how they refused to give me a tag for my Z car WITH A CLEAR TITLE!!!

in california from 1951 to 1955 they all used the 1951 plate and then a metal tag that covered the 51 that had the correct year on it.

In California, maybe, but certainly not at PennDOT.

  22. @ Bumpstick:

There was this Mexican guy who was cussing at thelady at the DMV in KS, because he failed his written test for the third time, and the lady told him to study the book, and he was all mad at her, I was surprised she didn't blow up on him. Soe people they have to put up with are scumbags.

But it was a pain to get my Biscayne re-registered and tagged. The Chevy dealership in Marceline had to inspect it, then it had to get a title, then go to the DMV, then go through all the questions, it probably wasn't as bad as some of you guys' experiences. (it wasn't even supposed to pass inspection with a hole in the windshield:D )
