im building a 34 dodge 4 door sedan. im going for more of a modern build with alot of electronics. i have already decided that i will be getting everything dipped in copper instead of chrome. the running boards will be top coated with LineX. i know i can have them die it any color but im going to keep it black.

My main problem is what other colors should i use. I thought about black on the body, but in my area almost every hot rod is black. so im looking for something a little more unigue. i would like to think that a nice pearl white would really work well with the copper and black running boards. but then what color would you do the engine and compartment.

what other color combinations would look good with the copper trim? details would be nice, like pearl body, black engine, tan interior, and grey pinstripes. thats what i see right off the top of my head.

Green and copper if it's the right green....

  9. Midnight Blue with Copper....
Warm (not cool) Pearl White with Copper...
Metallic Dark Warm Grey with Copper...

Whenever I'm in doubt, I consult with this book or one similar...it's a book filled with color combinations that 'work'....it's especially useful when you're stuck with a color you can't change and you need to find colors to harmonize with what you're stuck with...

    The 1926 Rickenbacher Super Sport
had a lot of copper trim and black and cream paint.

  13. Notice in the above example Signor Campesi has graced us with that the copper on the Rickenbacker is nearly always offset by the darkest portions of the paint. The gloss black against the copper provides not only high contrast, but a lovely color and surface to reflect the copper into...thus I prefer darker colors to offset your copper.

Ford Wimbledon white works well with copper. So does a nice dark green. A dark wine red can look real classy too.

I'm on board with this. A maroon with copper trim, and saddle tan guts would be one classy lookin' ride IMO.

Thanks alot everyone. its still going to be a long time before its ready for paint. but i think this is a detail that you need to nail down before it gets too late in the project.

i like the white on copper, but we do get alot of road grim and the gf thinks we will be washing the car all the time.

my daily driver is a sand black, so the graphite grey and copper would be a real nice look sitting next to it in the driveway. it will also allow the black running boards blend in nicely.

the green and copper would be my third choice as of right now. it reminds me of more of a victorian look.

since im trying to make this look like a factory built car in the late 90's. i will approach a dealership and see if they have some paint chips to look at and lay them next to the copper.

more suggestions and comments are well appreciated. thanks again to everyone who has commented already.

  20. I thought about doing this years ago on a coupe I had but never did it. I think the graphite grey sounded good until someone mentioned a maroon with copper metallic. I think that would be outstanding.

I've always preferred the off-white and/or black with copper. I like dark purple with copper too, but that may just be me.

Ricky Madison built a show winning '39 coupe that was pink and copper.

no i thought it was a vinyl top actually, nice ride

and those that mentioned pink, that aint happening. may have worked for that guys show car, but im trying to build a daily driver, something to drop my future kids off at soccer or whatever they get into. a more forgiving color might be on the pallet, something i dont have to clean ever time i take it out.

I believe Bud's girlfriend in Felsen's book suggested pink and white and the car won a first in show first time out in fantasyville.

  28. The roadster has an almond colored frame to off set the GM factorypack copper color on the body, an off white vinyl interior and Oldsmobile gold engine.

I have noticed that (strange as it may sound), some of the highlights I have added like the red paint in the lightening holes on the front axle and wishbones seems to really compliment the copper well too.

Copper is not as bright as chrome or gold, so the usual extreme contrasting yet pleasing colors can appear odd or even cheap/obvious.

Black or white are background or highlight and neutral 'colors' and really go with any other color - so kind of boring and safe.

Red or yellow are similar to copper and so are the browns over red, so you can enhance or subdue shapes.

That's why greens and blues will arguably create a more elegant and interesting match.
Green giving a warmer and blue a colder feel.

Just keep in mind that copper will oxidize and get darker without frequent polishing, so get the right shade of whatever color you choose in the end.

i have been told to put atleast 5 coats of clear coat over the copper and it wont oxidize. not sure if its a specific kind of clear or the same as whats on the rest of the car.
