i pulled out the old flattie with the idea to rebuilt and go threw it. After pricing and doing the job right,Wow i need deeper pockets. I think for the money I am going to go the 302 route. I want to t5 Ford mustang box
I think the stock rearend will work. May be up grade when finished and driven. The old girl is 51 f1 any one out there who has done the swap?
It looks pretty straight forward, curious about doing the peddles like to keep unless might have do swing thing.Any pic would be great I would like to have the hot set to do it right. Thanks G

I haven't done this swap in many years, but it's pretty easy. Keep the stock pedals, and for that matter, keep the stock center crossmember and modify it to work with what you are doing. resist the urge to cut it out and replace it with the ready made cheapy trans cross member that is commercially available out in rodderland. The reason for this is simple, bridging the top and bottom of the rails as the stock member does, the rails resist the twisting that the cab mounts impart on them. I can think of a way right off the top of my head to connect the stock clutch pedal to the throw out arm with a Morse cable for easy use. As far as front mounts, think Ch***is Engineering or someone of that caliber... not he cheapies out there.

I dropped a 351W into my '51. I also used an M5R2 5 spd out of a mid '90's F-150. The shifter location was much better on the M5R2, and they generally are cheaper transmissions even though the gear ratios are very similar to the T5's. I had to fab motor mounts and modify the trans cross member for larger 5 spd. You can use the original pedal mounts, but you most likely have to convert the clutch to hydraulic for a late model 5 spd. Not a big deal as it is fairly easy to get a small clutch master cylinder in alongside the brake unit.

Good Luck and Thank you for not using a SBC.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I just as of today, grabbed a mustang 302 with a T5 out of a 84 Mustang. I received the unit for free but the shifter location is not desirable for a F1 truck for sure. I will be looking for the trans previously mention as well. Another thing to consider is that if you plan on using a manual fan, the spacing to the radior isn't there...

i am finishing up my 48 with a 5 speed and small lock chevy. used a fox body mustang clutch cable( one for a v-8, it is adjustable,) made a bracket and bolted it to the side of the trans to secure the cable housing. works like a champ. the shifter was at the edge of the seat, so i made a bracket to move it 2 inches forward, and made me a new shifter. slicker than cat ****

We are installing a T5 and 351w into my brother-in-law's F1. We swapped the mustang tail housing for one from a S10 T5 to move the shifter location. It moves the shifter to just behind the main body of the transmission, witch should put it just forward of the seat. There is a thread on here somewhere about the swap, just search for s10 t5.

Another cheap upgrade is an explorer rear end. Its almost the same width as the stock rear and they can be had cheap at junkyards thanks to cash for clunkers. We picked up one with limited slip, disk brakes, and 3.73 gears for about $150.

Now back the inplant.. I did get a 302 and T5 it takes longer than it used too. Old farts can't move quickly like you young bucks! but it is coming together. i have rebuilt the rear end Dana 44.Starting on the fabbing of the motor and trans along with a Jag Front end. Can you say that ? Jag?
I have some Ideas on the clutch cable or I have a hydraulic Clutch throw out bearing. Not wild about the hydraulic throw once in, thats it .if a problem happens lot of work to take out.Once I get the motor and trans in I will get more jazzed and peddle down till they float and grab another gear!!LOL:D

Blue Ghost,...That Explorer rear works great,... And being they come with the factory discs, it's an easy job to have a good working e brake. And... much cheaper than the rear disc brake kits out there !!
