should I sell?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by skatermann, Jan 10, 2012.

  1. ok so a local guy I know who has two model A's wants to buy a flathead I have, to put in his 1930 tudor.
He asked what else I had for the switch because parts are hard to get over here.

Heres what I have that he wants: a running '36 flathead(needs new starter), a '40 ford rearend, a '38 top loader ****** and I also have a set of socal speedshop flathead motor mounts.
none of this stuff is rebuilt or anything, but there all in pretty good condition.

the catch is that I don't have a torque tube for the rearend, I don't have a clutch, and the motor has one aluminum head and one cast iron head(I was originally gonna get a set of Don Orosco's 21 stud Eddie Meyers)

so given all that what do you guys think this pile of stuff is worth?

    thanks in advance!
    Joe

  2. Not worth much to me but no doubt worth a load to him. Like you said parts are hard to get over there.

if you ae in cheap mark up 30% and sell. If you don't want to give him the friend's price mark up 45%

I'd have to ask if you have a planned use for it. That would be the first item in the decision. Makes it a yes/no decision.

Are you paying to store it for a possible future project that hasn't been found or decided on yet? One vote for sell there.

Is the block in good enough shape that you won't get it back because it is cracked or otherwise damaged? I've told a couple of guys that I wouldn't sell something they asked about simply because I wasn't sure that the item was good enough to sell for what it "should" be worth.

Lastly does he have anything to trade that he may not need but you could really use right now? Sometimes a trade is better than cash both ways.

A gent I worked for years ago added 50% to the purchase price to make the selling price on items years ago. He called that the one third markup.

I would think stuff in Hawaii would be twice as much as on the mainland.

  5. I don't want to sell a cracked block, but it may not be cracked

try a search here in Cl***ified Parts For Sale. even if old ad will give you a ball park idea of value. do a search here in Social Groups for one from Hawaii. also, 808 Speed Shop on Oahu may have a contact you could use too.

Here on the East coast a 21 stud flathead is not worth very much compaerd to the 24 stud flathead. But I would think your motor should be worth at least $500.00 to the right person.

if it is good I think it is worth what ever it would cost to replace said items if you had to ship them in from the mainland.

  9. thanks for all the help! I was thinking $600/$700 range for the flathead(I paid $600 and then shipped it from california), or maybe a partial trade for the 4 banger thats comes out of the car. And for the rear and ****** I just want what I paid for them($150 and $75 respectively)
    do guys think thats fair?

    thanks again!

Yeah the stuff costs more because of the difficulty of getting it.....
Do you want to sell it? That is the biggest question.....

If this guy is not a personal friend, I would treat this as a business transaction.

That flattie is not real desirable to the hot rodder, they are looking for the 59A or 8BA. So you have the opportunity to sell that flattie, take it. Based on what these parts go for here, I think you have it priced fairly at $700. As for the 40 rear, I just purchased one last week less one hub & drum and paid $150, thought I got a good buy. As for the 38 toploader, I would never sell it for $75.00. I have seen these go for north of $600.00 on Ebay and they have to pay shipping.

If you really want that banger ,this may be a way to sweeten the deal for the buyer. Here you decide what it is worth to you.

As with any part of this age, to be fair to both parties it must be understood that they sell (AS IS).

  13. Parts already on the island should bring a premium.
What the hell does it cost to ship an engine to Hawaii ?
    A bulky heavy rear end?

Not only the shipping cost, but the h***le. Then there's the risk one takes buying without inspection, waiting for safe un damaged arrival.

I agree, I would certainly make it so you are not going to be losing money if you try to replace them. Look at it this way too, you have what he wants and its right there, he doesn't have to search high and low for it. That in its self is worth you making a few bucks just because you would have to hunt for new parts.

Then sell it with the understanding that buyer will get it checked to see if it has cracks and that you will refund the money if unrepairable cracks are found.

    It's worth a Model A without a drivetrain. :D Trade him.......!

  18. thanks for all the advice!

  19. Keep the aluminum head for garage art.

  20. the guy is a friend and he's helped me a bit with my car so I don't want to jack up the price to much, but I also want to make a little money(theres a couple local A's sitting in garages that I have my eyes on), and I need to buy brakes for my car!

  21. I think the deal is gonna go through! (although I'm not counting my eggs yet)

I want to thank you guys for helping me out!
