just purchased a drop axle from sid ad dropped axles. and got some new king pins now i need to get them installed. does anybody know a good machine shop in houston that can do this for me? i live on the northside of town but will travel if the shop is worth it. the rookie
Hmmm, I would think you could do it yourself. Buy a reamer for the job, I would guess Speedway has the correct one. The reamer would cost about what a machine shop would charge to do the job. So if you bought the reamer the next job would be free.
Are you ding a Ford? As the Chevys can be pressed in and out at home and normally no reaming required. Give Sid a call, he probally know folks in your area, after all, he is world wide!
anybody that does big truck springs should be able to do it. larger trucks use king pins still. The heightman company is in houston but I'm not sure what part.
I****ume you are talking about fitting the king pins to the bushings in the spindles on a Ford axle. Any automotive machine shop with a piston pin (Sunnen) hone can hone the bushings to fit the pins with a near perfect fit. The best and easiest way to do it. Lot better than reaming.
I have a Ford kingpin reamer. You are welcome to come down on a weekend. I'll do some research so we can find out how to use it.
Herbert Heitman Co. on McCarty off I-10 on the East Side. They reline brake shoes, emergency brake bands(Mopar), early 50s Chrysler disc brake discs, spring shackle and spring eye bushings.
Its important to remember that BOTH of the bushing bores must be in a line. you can't ream them individually and expect them to line up. you might get lucky, but the kingpin might not go in and you have two wasted bushings. I just talked to "Oakie" Joe, he is Sid's buddy and drops a lot of his axles. He gave me the rundown on how to do it. Shoot me a P.M. and we'll get it done, if you don't want to spend money at a shop. You're buying the beer!
thanks richard im going to call bruces in the morning to see how much it is. but i will let you know for sure i would like to learn how to do this as well. sid wont have my axle to me for another week or so, they still had to have it checked and blasted and painted. thanks for all the help guys
haha thanks danny i meant to ask you sunday when i saw your truck out, but never saw you around. sounds like a plan bring everything up when i get my axle in. give me a chance to see the shop and smack Matt Jacobs
Hey guys if you need bushings reamed send me the spindles when you send me your axle. I offer the service of reaming bushings. I'll also install the spindles if you want. I build allot of axles complete any more. www.droppedaxles.com
