I had a 1" block added to a Volvo head and a busted thermostat mount fixed by Dover Cylinder Heads in Atlanta and was very pleased.
Almost any modern automotive machine shop either has a source or can weld aluminum--they've had to acquire the ability in order to repair all the aluminum heads on today's production cars.
A lot of issues with old aluminum heads, mostly corrosion and coolent within the casting itself. While those issues can be taken care of ,it takes time to do it right which adds up to spending some $$$$. Its no fun chasing a crack when the water jacket is dirty.
nice avatar; used to work at wilson head repair,on jackman road,toledo,ohio...dont have phone number, but he does good work... done mine after i left to go back to welding pipelines. tell em kevin sent you......i know ,i know ,ship em...he gets them all the time...kev
Thanks...I will look him up... My only other choose is to find one good head... But these dont have a lot of corrosion in the water jacket...
Do not know where you are in Flordia, but Clements Porting Service in Columbus Georgia does repairs on aluminum heads for some of the leading race teams in the south. His telephone # is 706-689-5711. His address is 190 Brennan road, Columbus, GA 31906. Mike
I used to do them but a big problem is heat treating after the repairs. Shops like mine cannot do that piece of the puzzle and i can tell you that after welding on a cylinder head the aluminum is as soft as putty, you can just about push a decent punch right into it. What i now do is send the head back to the mfgr, they see the worst possible damage and are the absolute best to make the repairs and them treat them back to the right hardness. I realize Fenton is long out of buisness but i would give Brodix etc a call and see if they can do them, as another said Sonny Leonard can do them and has the treating capability, but when you are talking to a repair shop ask them about the heat treatment. And, as others have said, they will be a nasty piece of work to get clean enough to weld.
Depends. If you live in NW Fla, then I know the welder for you. Bobby Alexander at Power Line 850 457 1811 He has done a lot of alum welding for me and I am very pleased. Saved my Thickson and rebuild several fins for my Buick 45 fin drums. I dare ya to try and find the repair! Old time hot rodder and racer. Nice guy too!
