I need some drums and shoes for my front brakes (and honestly probably all the way around). My local O'Reillly has the hoses (cracked and won't p*** inspecction) on order for me tomorrow. Any suggestions for other places? Prices? I'd love front disc brakes, but the $995 conversion price has me a bit . . . . OUCH!
Can't help with the brake parts but I do have a NOS power steering box for that car....it's for sale.
Why not just have O-Reilly's order up the shoes and wheel cylinders? I did just that for shoes on my old 64 Riviera, took about 1 day to come in from the warehouse?
Read again guys, it's a Special. Lil car. Big Buick brake parts aren't difficult to get, but I bet those Specials are a *****. Do they interchange with the other "small" GM cars from that time? F-85 and Tempest and whatnot? Might be able to cross-breed to get what you need.
good luck! mine were fresh when i bought the car. have you tried aluminmv8.com? i'm not sure if he has brake parts though. hopefully someone knows a source. i did not know that disc conv. was a grand!! there's jut not enough parts for those things.
I just checked my old Wagner and Eis catalogs - no luck. There is a listing for the early Tempest brakes so I would guess THEY are NOT the same. The early F85 has no listing so those are PROBABLY the same. Take your old shoes to a brake relining place to get them relined. They are 9 1/2 diameter which was/is a common size.
I just bought my old '63 Skylark back today. They guy I get it from said he was finding brake pars at car queast. If anyone can help I have a post with a couple questions. Thanks.
I've owned many 61-63 skylarks and specials. They have the part numbers wrong for the break shoes in EVERY book. I have the correct part numbers at home. As far as the wheel cylinders, you have have to just rebuild them.
i ve bought every thing from Kanter in the past, though I've never had to buy drums. Parts books are filled with mistakes if they even list stuff for these cars. parts are out there but you have to hunt, definately not the easiest old car to keep on the road.
argh!! my parts book with the correct numbers is in my storage unit. I looked all over the house for hours before I remembered putting it there. I'll try to dig it out before next weekend sometime. Sorry.
Check out scarebird.com - front and rear conversion mounting plates, ~$75 a pair they use off the shelf parts - 89 Mitsubishi Galant rotors & Chevy S-10 Calipers. Downside is you need custom wheels, Stockton wheel can make them. I figure the GM A-body can handle 15 x 6 wheels. The bolt pattern is 4 x 4.5 (114.3mm) The same as 84 - 89 Hoda Accord! need 2.5" long studs, and 2" Aluminum spacers, to compensate for the front drive offset with a hub-centric bore on one side and a hub lip to match the Honda wheel bore.
