We used that Dupont Hot Hues Hot Rod Black on the 53 Chevy... it's closer to a satin almost just a dull sheen... there's nothing flat about it. Just my opinion on the look of it. If you want a shinier satin that works great. We didn't lay it down but, the guys that did for us said it went down real smoothly and was easy to work with.

    Hell yeah!

  6. Actually, thats the old paint color. It is now a rolling billboard for a Cheeze company. Flat black is sooo 1999.

  7. This is a fine, fine example of why I have the signature I do below.

Man, you're sick... i think i feel nausea coming on as I type this...

Aw, ****, go for it. The chicks will dig it, anyways. ;)

  11. My point? You are an artist. Flat black is like Polo Cologne in the 80s, everyone did it. It got old fast. Use some thought. What about a satin graphite or Burple with GLOSSY rally stripes in the same hue? Or the KISS principal, basic white and stripe the **** out of it? a Donahue replica in Blue and Yellow?

Just go nuts, think outside the box.

Olives are the next golds and coppers. Quote me on that.

I understand, I am just having some fun.

I really do not care much for current trendy colors or themes. I like things simple that will stand the test of time better. I do not want a chameleon paint job (I personelly hate that paint) that will be completely out of taste in a few years. I personally like flat black. I grew up poor and almost everything I have ever driven has been at least one shade of primer. In fact now that I really think back I have never had a complete car painted before at all. So me the satin is a complete step up from what I am used to without getting too far out of my comfort zone. I really do not care if others have it or not. The only cars that I see with it are from the 50's or older so I thought that it would even be different on a muscle car. I am not sure if I would flame the car or not. I thought about doing some simple flames with a nice gloss clear coat against the flat black base but that is still up in the air.

I hadn't thought of a flat or satin color? Wouldn't that look more like a faded paint job than an intentional finish? Anyhow, please do not take my posts as anything more than just having fun. I really like this place and do not want to wear out my welcome just yet.

Well marc here's what I think, paint it what you want to and enjoy, so here's something that might work pretty good, a few years back I had a 30 roadster
and painted it with John Deer flat black tractor paint, thats right tractor paint funny
thing is its fuel proof and holds up pretty dam good,Best thing is it ran like a deer.Any way some old hot rodders told me about it so I did it and was glad.
Thats my tip for the day. Chris

Im painting my chev satin black at the moment. All Im doing is mixing 1 part of "jet black" with 1 and a half of "multi purpose thinners".... so far it looks good

Glad to hear I haven't burned any bridges with you seeing how you have been here a while and probably know a hell of a lot more than I do. I am sure that I will need you help somewhere down the road.

What is this "jet black" that you speak of? A specific paint?

We've been putting a flattened clear (PPG's Flex and Flat) over colrs and it comes out pretty cool. We usually put the base color on then the flames and clear the whole thing with the flat clear. I've never tried it on black. The black may not be pure black after the flat clear. It may look a little milky.

Stay away from the dp90. It will oxidise in less than a year in your sun.

Flat black looks good on ANY car! These guys just get their ******* in a wad cause some people think they have a traditional hot rod just cause it's flat black........even if it's an S-10 pick up.

Here's a pic of a truck we did with the flat clear over a color.

Sorry that last pic wasn't as good as I thought it was. This is a better pic of another truck.

Seems like a waste to me; do all that work & when it's finished you have something that looks like it's faded in the sun. Maybe you're going for the "it's been finished for 25 years" look...(although my paintjobs still look great & very glossy after 25 years).
I guess it's one way to avoid buffing, though! :D

Thanks for the help. Those last to pictures look great. I thing that is what I am after more than the actual "flat" color. Now you guys got me thinking about a "satin" color. Damn it, just when I thought I had my mind made up you guys go and edumicate me on other possibilities. Hmmmmm....

Driver....there's a lot of advatages to the way these trucks are painted.

First the bodies are not perfect. If I'm gonna spend the time to buff a car I want it perfect and it drives me nuts if it's not.

One of the best parts is they always look good. Guys with shiny cars have to wash them and wax them all the time. Iwon't even mention the Cal. Dusters. :D

Fingerprints, dust and stuff don't show on the flattened paint like it does on gloss.

We use and abuse our trucks. They are trucks and we use them that way. Mine and John's sit outside most of the year. We don't need lawnchairs...we just sit on a fender.

We can scuff and reshoot our trucks in a good weekend. It takes a week to buff a car right! I do shiney paint too....it's just not for me.

Best of all you have to see these things in person to get the full effect. The paint has a really cool glow to it. It's hard to explain but people love how our trucks look. If I had a dime for every time someone asked how I did it I'd be rich.

  24. See, lots of OTHER ideas out there. A little poking and some pics from Clark got you thinking!:D

  25. Pic of up the book Barris, Customs of the 60's. There will be lots of ideas in there for you. Barris did a number of later 60's cars as kustoms. Yes, they were kind of weird...but cool.

I'd like to see a picture of him in a jail cell..... but, apparently that's never gonna happen.

Let us know what you decide on your camaro, I'd like to see how tough one looked in flat black. I have a friend with a 68 Chevelle that's flat black and I've always liked it that way.
