Technical What are ya Flathead guys runnin 4 Muffs?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by da34guy, Sep 8, 2011.

  1. Get a pair of resonators for a late '90s Chrysler minivan and run only those, and no mufflers. A buddy has a '41 Ford V8 flathead truck that has these, with the exhaust running under the rear bumper, and it sounds very nice. Mild rumble with nice tone at 60 mph.

Smithy's, 2 inch system.....is the choice for my 8BA powered 40. Glasspacks tend to get a bit louder with age,... Fore really loud glasspacks, try "CherryBomb"... I used to buy 'em from "Pep Boys", but a lot of other places should have them.

Never go wrong with CHERRYBOMB! We have been building glass packs since 1968 in the same facility in Loudon, Tn. Yes "Loud" on. We couldn't have picked a more fitting town name if we tried. CHERRYBOMB also offer a series of traditional mufflers similar to Smithy and Porter. Check us out at CHERRYBOMB.com

Thanks for the warm welcome. ; ) Running a pair of 87507 12" glass packs on a 50 Ford w/a Flattie. Sounds great! Not to much inside noise when cruising and has a nice deep idling tone.

    Loudon, TX....haha....that's pretty cool.

I'm running nothing but headers and straight pipes on my warmed up 8BA, but if I wanted to tone it down a bit I'd find the shortest glasspacks available. It would be a shame to over-muffle that beautiful sound. (is over-muffle a word? LOL)

The new Dodge hemi trucks have a normal muffler under the bed, then these little hot-dog looking mufflers on each tailpipe. The trucks sound great, maybe they'd be an option.

I have Speedway U Weld headers, that originally were welded up with dumps into long glass packs and turn outs. Lost one of the glasspacks on the 1600 mile drive from ND to OR so I cut off the other one, split the case and cut the inner portion in half. Cut out the block off plate and welded in the baffle and that is it. Sounds nice and mellow at idle but at full rev rolling through downtown Portland between tall buildings it is pretty loud!

On my coupe, Headers and straight pipes that end right under the seat. Its loud, and annoying as hell.... I love it. On my Merc. Fentons, and cheapy short glasspacks that I got from Advance Auto. It sounds amazing in my opinion. A nice deep rumble Just like a Flathead should sound.

Harley muffler cut in half, one jammed in each side of the header on my flattie. Sounds better than my bike!

My last flat head has 2" pipes from center exhaust and 2 inch from combined 1-3, so 2" pipe , steel packs in center, all the way to rear bumper. straight runs under the axle.
Got a ticket, cop heard me 6 blocks away, so I wound up with 1946 Green hornets on the end of each pair of pipes , cleared the police for sound and could slip them off for lakes works. Loved them.

My girlfriend's mother hated them and me, because she could hear me coming from 3 blocks away. And for longer when I left.

The "RETRO" traditional hot rod CHERRYBOMB muffler is actually a muffler and not a glass pack, so it might be louder than glass pack. The canister has no fiber glass in it and internal tube is on louvered half way thru to give your Flattie a deeper tone. Check them out. They are available in 2.25" diameter(87885) or 2" diameter(87886).

Just FYI fellas, da34guy put mufflers on it, painted it dark green, and sold it to another HAMBer in New York. I never heard what he used for muffs, but I know it was loud... like a hot flatty should be!

    ....pipes with 12" motorcycle baffles....

  24. For my avatar Summit sells baffles you can slip in to your pipes - still real loud even with two sets, one close up front, the others at the end. So I tried using muffler packing inside the 3-rings of the baffle - I guess I really packed it too tight as it's now too soft. So, I'll remove packing until I get the right "sound".

I'm using straight pipes that end just before the rear wheels ....
