I'm embarr***ed to say, but I'm taking the lazy way out. I've grappled with a transmission filler tube leak and have lost. I ask, as I hang my head in shame, what's a good sealer to put around the base to keep it from leaking. I was going to put on some JB Weld, but there is probably something better people have had success with. The car is a real beater and held together with spit and bail wire, so I'm not necessarily worried about doing it right. Thank you in advance.
Yes,clean real good with brake clean and smear rtv around tube.Keep my "found on road dead" [ford pickup] together with rtv.
On Chevy's there's either a pair of o-rings or an easily removable seal that you have to change. You might be able to go to the parts house or local trans. rebuilder and get a sympathetic ear to help you out. I wouldn't pound a cork in it and if I'd follow any of the advice received so far it would be that from Shopking.
What ever sealer, rtv ect, be sure it goes on to clean tube and hole, and let it dry for at lest a day before adding fluid or running. Tube can not wiggel,if it dose ,fix bracket so it dose not.
Thanks for all the advice! I just picked up the grey RTV. The tube is bolted to the bell housing , but there is no way I can get to the bolt. Its a 64 chevy in a 63 buick so the clearances arent what they are supposed to be. The connection is solid so this should work perfectly.
