As far as taking it to Deuce day, I think I would wait 'til it's completion. really no wrong answer, just me. Like the thread a lot, been following since the beginning. I met Pete at Baylands one year when he drove my cousin, Walter Gibson's Buick Nailhead dragster.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Man, that is so true. It seemed like every street rod built in the 70s had a Mustang shifter. When I started building cars in the late 70s, my most sought after items were Vega GT steering wheels, a Pioneer Supertuner, 15x8 Corvette Rallys, and the hard to find '67-only disc brake rally caps. Every car I built back then had those parts on it. I used to pop off my caps every time I parked the car because they would get stolen if you didn't.

Seeing that Vega GT wheel in the '32 brought back some memories. That was a very popular item back in the day. Still a good-looking wheel, in my opinion.

Pete's 32 and my 34 had 15" x 8" Corvette Rallys that Eric moved the centers on so they would fit under the rear fender and 15" x 6" in the front. Nothing looks worse than a tire sticking outside the fender!

I just had a conversation with Pete. We will be at Deuce Day. Drivable but I can't guarantee anything else.

I'd wait to grace the Peterson with your ride. Nothing like the impact of it being complete to the 9's and debuting it.
Yall going on the 3rd? Should be fun.

Rick, my coupe had a Cougar shifter in it (same as Mustang but with a faux leather handle). As for Deuce Day, for me that is a toss up. Personally I would finish it, but that's me. I also think that if you want to take it in what ever level of completion it is in, by all means take it, its just that I am not into running an unfinished car, probably because I HATE to take it apart and finish it later.
As for the pre-catalog days, even though I am in the mail order ch***is business, sometimes I think maybe we aren't having as much fun as we used to when we had to work harder at it.

Used early Camaro shifters around here ( Horseshoe ? ) If I dig deep enough I think I have a 4 or 6 page early Summit flyer. That was before they ever thought about a catalog. Looking forward to seeing the 32' move under it's own power

    Thanks Dale.
If more guys had to do it the way we did it, there would be less criticism than we hear today.
How many young guys paint their own own cars like we did? Or design their own suspension systems? I think the percentages are way down.
Also, I don't think guys get together and help each other like we did.

I remember when Pete taught me how to do fibergl*** on the tilt front end of my 56 Chevy when I was 18 and Tom Vandenberg welded the brackets for me. The only common thread we have is cars. Maybe that is why we are still friends today.

Hey Rick, you are correct. There are too many out there that are quick to criticize but have no real experience to back it up. I also agree about getting together and helping. There is not nearly as much of that as there used to be. One reason may be that our hobby now consists of mainly "car shows" rather than "rod runs". We used to get together to cruise and attend events where there were almost no trophies, yet we had a lot of fun. Now, most of the time, we go to a show and park the car and get disappointed because we didn't win an award (we meaning the participants of the hot rod hobby). I still remember when you and I wired your coupe. What a time.

I agree but I am from your time frame. I bought the 2nd 6in Bell axel ever produced for sale from Jim Ewing. I built my car, rolled it then built it again 25 years later. The only thing I did not do was Upholstery and make the hood. Oh yeah I had a shop straighten the frame from the accident. Now days many of the ones who say they do it like it was done back in the day do not have a clue what that really means!!

I like the clean simple understated work Pete does. He is a master at making it look like it should. Nice work.

It looks like Tom Vandenberg is going to start the headers next week.
The best part about it, he'll be doing it at Pete's. Just like the old days.

Hey Rick, that's great that TV is doing the headers. Give him a little har***ment for me would you. Do you ever see Craig Felbinger, I haven't seen him since our first VT reunion. I hope I can come down a day or so early this year for LARS so I can do some shop hopping and see some of the old club guys. I may even see if I can talk Terry Polley into coming down.

    Rick,
Have you and Pete thought about bringing the sedan to the Eagle Field Drags in May? There should be a large contingent of HAMB members present. Some friends of mine including a father and son team are working on a chopped 32 sedan with a big block Chevy are trying to get it ready for the event. I think that reunion is as close to the 80's at Fremont as we will ever see. The 'T' shirt sales might help pay for the trip.

Dale- I saw Craig at Pete's party. He's doing fine except he sold his 5w.

Marty- Pete and I are planning to go to as many events as possible. If the Eagle Field Drags are half as good as Fremont, it should be awesome. We hope to have the car finished by then.
    Thanks for thinking of us.

    Finish it first!

  21. Alot of people appear afraid to give it a go and try and build their car themselves or do certain aspects of it.

I dont have the money to pay someone to build my car so I did a large majority of the work on my roadster myself.

That said, if I had more money I would still want to do as much of the build myself. Its all about personal satisfaction.

Keep up the great work with the E&B car!

    Greg-
I agree with you about wanting to do the work yourself. Some of the best times I've had was working on my cars.
I've also shared this with my children. My daughter would go with me every Saturday when she was in high school to Terry Finch's shop(an hour from us) and work on our 34 coupe. She says this was a fun and memorable time in her life. I really believe this has imparted a fond love for cars of all types in her.

Stopped by Petes w/ a friend Saturday in our hot rods. Car's coming along great! Pics don't do it justice.

  25. Driveshaft is welded up and will be balanced tomorrow evening. Pictures have been taken. Pics later with explanations on what driveshaft builders do.
I'm proud, Rick. You will be too.

Rick, Glad to hear Craig is good. I agree, some of the most fun I have had was messing with my and my friends cars. I really envy you and Pete being able to do this again. In my area, there is not the camaraderie a**** the car guys as there was when we were in the club, and possibly as there is still in your area. You guys are having fun and doing a great job so keep us up to date as much as you can, that way we can all enjoy some of the fun.

Steve- Thanks for the kudos. Pete is very well rounded in his talents!

Pat- I look forward to seeing the driveshaft. I wish you could have posted pictures along the way. Most people don't have a clue what goes into making a driveshaft.

Dale- I'm sure I'm having more fun than Pete. Sometimes for him it's just work.

  28. Rick, rest easy. Pictures have been taken all the way through building the shaft. I will do my best with posting pics and describing the process as it it done.

Rick, I know how Pete feels. That's why it is so tough to make time to work on my coupe. There are definitely downfalls to mixing your hobby and business.
