its 10 degrees here nothing to do but ponder. im putting a 41 ford together the rear tires are 235 75 15 and the rims measure 9.5 inches when straightedged from front to back. have 1 inch clearence from inside of tire to frame and the same on outside to fender. tread width is about 8.5 however it flares out at the sidewall. looking to get a little more tread on the road. am i right in thinking that if i reduce the rim width i could increase tire width. 235's measure 10" at widest point
A 235/75 R15 tire fits best on a 7" rim. And no, it's not a good idea to put a wider tire on a narrower rim.
The proper way to measure the width of a wheel is from inside bead to inside bead. The section width on a 235 is 9.25" however the tire will wear the best on a 7" rim as stated above.
thanks for your response i did not set these tires up they came to me that way.was probably a ***** to get them on the rims non the less they are on them. my question was if i go to 8 inch rims could i use a wider tire. thanks
i understand that tread width of a 235 will not change but what about the section width? on a wider rim it would taper out from tread to rim and opposite on skinnier rim
thanks good stuff as usual. car wont be on the road till mid 2012. might ****can 9.5 rims go to 8" and up tire size. or burn off 235's first
