Thinking about a Chevy big block 366 I saw for sale. Got any ideas how much a fresh rebuild long block 366 should sell for?
I not sure of any BBC that is 366". They started at 396; 402 (not to be confused with SBC 400) Chev also called the BBC a 400; 427 then 454. Price depends on which it is with the 402 and 396 on the lower end.
It's a tall deck truck engine used in a lot of school buses. It's not much good unless you have a truck or bus. It should be very cheap. Mutt
seeing that most BBC's are pretty cheap, id find a rebuildable core for the more common ones. although... there is nothing wrong with running the tall deck blocks, just be prepared to compensate for the extra height. ie. manifold adapters, longer pushrods etc ... about all i can remember right now.
Extra expense for tall deck adaptations, big-block weight and bulk with small-block displacement...I say put whatever it costs toward a 454.
have had most BB chevs back in 80s i dont even know of a 366 but then i stayed the hell away from tall bus blocks did have a 427 tall but swapped it off i would say to just let it p*** & look for a reg block
366 truck block. Most guys around here steer clear of those things. Lots of older GMC milk trucks and utility ch***is had them (freind works at a dairy)
Yup - the only good parts in it are the steel crank, four bolt main caps, and the "thumb" truck rods. Some early ones also had large oval port heads. Should be very cheap.
Thanks to all ya'll. Still new and learning. I'll forget I ever saw the thing. And yes it came out of a delivery truck of some kind.
As others have said, its a tall deck, probably out of a school bus or dump truck. Makes tons of torque, and probably runs out of power before 4000 rpm. The rods and crank and maybe the heads would be good to have. You could probably build a mean big block stroker out of it.
[wow 51 i have a 402 out of a 70 truck on dads garage floor & if i got offered $500 i would be pretty happy & watch it go away
The 366 has a tiny bore and the same crank as a 427. They are pretty useless. I like the 427 tall decks though. You can run long rods in them or strokers with no problems and the blocks I have tested have had thicker cylinder walls than the p***enger blacks. All 5 main caps are 4 bolt and the caps themselves are much beefier than p***enger car 4 bolt caps. If you got the room, pick up a cheap 427 tall deck, and either invest in some $300 long rods from **** and stock 427 pistons, or stroke the ****er and still have long rods. Wiend makes an oval port tall deck team G that goes for about $250, and run .400 longer pushrods and you have a very mean motor. I have a 427 TD with a **** 4.25" stroker crank that is going together. At 60 over is still has .300 thick cylinder walls. Its running 049 open chamber heads, a flat tappet hydralic cam, and 6.8" rods with an off the shelf piston. Should be about 550hp and idle like a stocker
haha, $500 is cheap... compared to some of the stuff ive got. IMO - i wouldnt want to buy a complete stock BBC... half the **** on it is useless. all i need is a rebuildable core. although, im not saying they are more plentiful than the SBC. all you really need is the block, rotating ***embly/flywheel and the heads (would be prefered)... other components can be found at a swap meet on the cheap. ie. brackets (pre-68), oil pan, timing cover, valve covers, headers, aftermarket water pumps, distributers, intake manifolds etc. couple weeks ago i baught a 454 with rotating ***embly for $100.
yep there still out there got my cuz a complet running 70s subbaran plow truck with a strong 454 very very rusty for $250 last fall he sold plow& body for same so got a free 454
