I just got a 50 chevy truck for my GF. I am going to get a Sids dropped axle. Wanting to drop it on a budget for her a cruiser. What are the options for putting disc brakes on it with the stock straight axle? Thanks Dan
Not sure if Scarebird has a kit for that but I used his stuff on a '53 Cadillac and was very happy. You basically get all the brackets, adapters etc. and a list of what other parts you need. That way you can get them on the cheap - ebay, parts store, junk yard, etc. For example, my Caddy used 88-up GM truck rotors and late model Caddy Eldorado calipers.
The brothers kit would be great if you want to stay with six lugs but you are still stuck with the ball bearing wheel bearings that while they work fine as long as you are diligent about keeping them repacked are expensive and at sometimes harder than hell to find at a local parts house if you are stuck somewhere. For 180.00 and a bit of junk yard scrounging or 450 complete the ECI setup looks like a pretty good deal. I'm not finding anything on the Chassis Engineering inc. site related to a disk conversion.
On the other hand my dd only vehicle, '49 Chevy 1/2 T, has the stock brakes, redone 100%, 65 K miles, overdrive 65-75 all day long with a '56 235. You don't need disc brakes, you want them.
I used a set from speedway on the front of my sons 55 series 1. they're five lug instead of six. they look like the set lawman has posted from chassis eng.
