Didn't know if this has been posted or not but Roy Montgomery p***ed away on the 4th of December. He was 79. He was a great old guy, anybody into cars that lives in lower Michigan knows him. He operated a shop noth of Lapeer and rebuilt flatheads for a living and sold new, used and nos parts. His collection of tin is unreal. He has a 32 phaeton and a 32 tudor that still has the original paint. I hung out with him often, usually there for no less than 3 hours and I never wanted to leave. You never know what you might find while you were there. I called this past weekend because he had a line on some seats for my roadster and when I called, I got the bad news. He was a good guy. R.I.P.
I was told by a number of folks, he was very ill,... so sorry to hear this,.... So-long Roy,.. you were a good egg !
Oh man, my heart just sank! Roy was one of the best guys around here, for parts, for advice, and just for great stories. He was my "go to guy" whenever I needed something '28-'48 Ford. Damn, I am gonna miss him. Seriously - hot rodding in Michigan just lost a true icon. Here he is - just as I'll always remember him....
Wow, great pic! You took your roadster to see him. I took my coupe in September up there and he said he could have had them for 30 bucks back in his day.
I have good memories of Roy. I purchased my car from him back in 1998. He is/was a real gentleman and it is very sad to hear that he is gone. I will always be grateful for the opportunity that he gave me when he agreed to part with the coupe.
Dammit, dammit, DAMMIT. Excuse me guys...forgive my mouth. Roy told me this fall to stop by, and I hadn't gotten up there yet. I knew he was sick, and I told myself I better get over there, just to hang out probably one more time. Tears in my eyes. I'm gonna miss him big time. He was one hell of a guy. Full of knowlege. Full of stories. Basically, just full of it...lol. A true, old-time hot rodder...been doing it since before many of us were born. He used to race the hell out his motorcycles on the dirt tracks when he was younger too...balls of steel. Had some awesome cars, and parts galore. Told him for a joke one time, "Roy, I need a water-pump for a '27 Whippet"...figuring maybe I could stump him. He replied, "Well...I don't have a pump, but I've got a front bumper." lol...amazing. He couldn't hear real good, and ya had to basically yell to him. After visiting him for a day, I'd come home, and my wife would wonder why I was talking so loud...lol. Yeah, I'd go over there with the intention of staying an hour or two...and end up killing a whole day sometimes...lol. I threatened more than once that I'd have to bring him some chairs that were a little more comfortable. His wife, Eldora, was always full of beans too. A real peach, she is. I wonder if his dog Sport is still with us? He was sick too for a while, but they fixed him up. In addition to his friendship, I'm of course gonna miss being able to ask him questions when I'm stumped. Gonna have to depend on you guys more now. One of the few guys that knew how to use a distributor test machine. Always took coffee and donuts when I went. If I didn't, he'd wanna know why...lol. Gosh, I wish I had managed to see him this season. Have to wait 'til I get to heaven I guess. Thanks for posting, olskool34. Thanks for the pic, qzjrd5
sorry to hear of the loss of a good friend....rest ***ured he is a**** his friends and peers and enjoying it....
he was a good guy i got parts from him a few times lets see what is son does with all that cool stuff..his nos collection was unreal
Never had the pleasure of meeting Roy in person but I felt like I knew him from all of the stories I was told about his collection of parts, cars and endless knowledge of all things early Ford. I was planing a trip to see him this spring for some stuff I had been looking for and had been unable to find. Guess I'll wait to hear what is going to happen with his "stuff" and maybe make a purchase from whom ever is taking over. RIP Roy!! Frank
We were telling Roy stories today at My shop. Some guys stoped by on the way, and i had to break the news to them. Cool old guy, He and his knowledge will be missed.
Just heard today...I had to sit down for a minute, couldn't believe it...Roy was the real deal, from building REAL hot rods, to being a factory-sponsered Harley flat track racer... I would be at a swap meet, and would hear Roy yelling for me across the parking lot. He always took the time to say hello, listen to your questions, and give you knowledgable, intelligent answers...and always had to rub-it-in a little when he found some great hot rod part for next to nothing! I'll miss him...GodSpeed my friend
