Hey guys, I am planning to run my exhaust all the way out the back on my model a tudor highboy for a nice quiet sound. Has anyone done this? Not sure how it will look on a highboy chassis. Thanks in advance guys!
At certain rpm long (multiple feet) pipes after the last muffler can amplify tones that the muffler worked hard to attenuate
did it on my coupe , lakes style over the frame then tuck back under and go over the rear axle out the back. I used flowmaster series 44s and they sound great no to noisy at all
We agree the further from the engine you can put the muffler the quieter it will be. Also to cut back on noise and vibration use braided flex couplers. CHERRY BOMB offers builders kits w/flex couplers, flex couplers alone, and 6 six different types of mufflers(not just glass packs anymore!) all having their own unique sound. Check us out at CHERRYBOMB.com. Available from SUMMIT RACING and JEGS.
I did on my coupe. I don't have a really good photo of just the exhaust, but here is a shot that shows the pipes, it may give you some ideas. I bought a bunch of 180 degree bends from Summit Racing, and cut and welded as needed, maybe have $100 in the whole thing minus the mufflers.
Forgot to mention I have Mellowtones. Not loud at all but wonderful tone when you get on it. Just as the name says; Mellow.
Get creative! If you don't want to see a ugly exhaust pipe back at the buggy spring put a pair of CHERRYBOMB glass packs at the very back. That axle doesn't more much, so you could mount them between the axle and the spring. Make a bitch'n mount off the spring mount to help support the glass packs! Just a thought! The possibilities are endless. FYI our builder kits come with 4qty 4ft straight pipes, 4qty u-bends, 4qty 90 degree bends, 2qty flex couplers, and 4qty stainless hangers and is also available from SUMMITRACING.com. We offer them in 2.25", 2.5", and 3" diameters.
Routing exhaust on a "A" railed hiboy is a tough thing to do visually. It always seems like there is too much stuff or the wrong stuff hanging down from the side view. What I have done with my '29 RPU, is to come off the 2" head pipes with a cone that increases it to 3" and an extension of 3" tube that runs it to just the back of the cab. Now this is all I'm gonna run, 'cause I like it loud my self. A trip to the local VW shop could do inserts for the cone to quiet it down a bit too. However, if I ever grow up and decide it's too loud (highly doubtfull at 47) I will make removable caps for the ends of the dumps, and grab two tight radius 2" u-bends and go up against the bed floor with two small glass or steel packs, then drop down and exit just under the axle. I can't step back far enough in my little shop to snap a picture for you, but if you have the latest Rodder's Journal (#53) take a look at page 152 and you will see exactly what I'm talking about. In my humble opinion that is the best looking hiboy "A" exhaust system out there, and ironically, it's almost a twin to mine. That picture is from the early fifties so I'll have to assume that the system was built with '35 or '36 Ford driveshaft tubes, but any VW shop can supply a pair of inexpensive "stingers" that will give the same look. Keep it all up as close as you can to the frame rails and it should be good.
Thanks for your input!I really like that look, but just not for this build, Im trying to hide a big ugly bbc with a full hood. I ordered block huggers from summit and have done everything I can do to tuck that exhaust in the frame with motor height, firewall master cylinder, etc. here's a pic of the ol' jalopy as it sits at the moment
