Keep up the noise while you can.....with the ageing population chances are it won't be long before
a noisy hobby will be an illegal hobby.....

My question is this, if your vehicle HAD to be quiet, would you still be into hot rods or would you find another hobby?

THIS! this is pretty much right on.
Example, when i was in high school, i got stopped several times for the exhaust on my truck (legal, with a cat and muffler) now my daily driver is a 2004 SRT-4, that came factory with no muffler, just a resonator. It is now a full 3" turbo back side exit, and i have never been stopped. all how you look and act sadly

Wow wide range here! Guess this proves who's doing what and where. Sorry, but the way I feel is: All the years we ran drag pipes on our Harley's, but these Joker's want to police rods, what's out of order and what's not??????

Look for a crime and leave us alone!!!! Your supposedly short handed according to our news and taxes!!!!!

    OOps, soap box!!!

I think the OP was under the impression that antique plates meant that the car is an exception to the modern laws, concerning safety and mechanical inspections. Like not mandating turn signals or seat belts or emissions reduction equiptment, if your car was not originally equipped with them, when it left the factory.

Kinda funny, because even though the law doesn't require me to have seat belts or turn signals on my '46 (regardless of resistration type) it DOES require a muffler! And around here they WILL stop an unmuffled car or Harley.

Don't get me wrong, while I totally support our law enforcement officials, and basic laws. Some of the laws and local cowboy wanna-be's (small town, will end up at Mc Donalds cops) really get me going. Hell, we got one cop within 12 miles that has been filed against numerous times for unpaided bills and leaving people hi and dry. Plus couldn't even keep a mortgage up on a 49K home, while acting like he's a swingin **** in control of what's right and wrong????? Somebody tell me what's wrong with this picture.

Antique plates are not a "free p***" to a lot of stuff. Like the OP, I run antique plates. Being that my T doesn't meet all the criteria, I drive as safe and law abiding as possible. So far, every cop (except the one who wrecked me) that I've met or seen has left me alone. I've gotten one ticket and it was for speeding on the freeway, but the cop told me that he wouldn't be at court that day... true enough, he didn't show.... case dismissed. In my experiences, as long as you're not being an ***, you won't get stopped.

I used to run straight headers on my roadster and it was extremely loud, even for my deaf ears! I would try to control the volume by getting out of the throttle if I saw a cop beacuse they do have sound ordinances around here and they do require a muffler. I finally opted to put 20" extensions with 7" internal baffles on the collectors. It is still louder than most peoples cars, but it is considered a legal exhaust now.
I think your situation is different in that you want to run your very unique looking exhaust and I can't personally think of a way for you to make it legal. This is one of those examples of when we make cool, one off stuff for our hotrods, but we cross the line of legalities :(

Straight pipes and only a warning man you were given huge break. Try this the next time your pulled over tell the officer your car was the economy model back then tell him the mufler was an option. Heck it works for me when im pulled over for no fenders.

The antique plates are just for registration purposes. "If" you were to get an inspection sticker in Texas, the requirements only pertain to the year model of the car and ALL cars are required to have a muffler.

Ive driven this car to runs and shows all over central texas and even as far as Denton for pistons and paint never had a problem up till now. I thank those who understand that its not a street rod with a $1500 muffler system. Mr Bell i think youve known me long enough to know that this really isnt to big of a concern just wanted lil input on it. Dealt with issues like this since i started driving was a minitrucker for longer than i care to share. Will i change the exhaust? NO!!! I believe in hot rods and just getting out and driving my car. I have a all original 1931 model A that is a trailer queen and its fun to show, but to drive no so much.

I guess common sense isn't so common...............................................................................NOT FOR YOU, AT LEAST. WE JUST VIEW IT AS ONE WAY TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE OUR CARS AND PUBLIC STREETS AND ROADS. "COMMON" SENSE SAY YOU KEEP YOUR FOOT OUT OF IT WHEN THE LAWS AROUND.
