  1. No he is just over thinking things.

We used to drain the water from an engine that was going to sit over the winter. No need to change the oil for winterization for sure, and fuel stabilizer does not need to fill the fuel lines there just isn't that much fuel in the lines and it will probably evaporate before spring.

Never the less what I described will work. Keep it simple.

And to think fools pay good money for av gas when they could just use the wind once the props were spinning!

  3. I tried the gas down the intake once and only once. Its amazing how fast the engine will rev up . I only used a bit of gas and it rev'd way higher than a normal engiune should. I will never do this again . And I do rev engines but not like this!! Uncontrolled!!!

  4. Exactly .... and he can drive it into the shop to winterize on the starter.

That's ok with me because I excel at failing metal tests that limit bizarre thoughts :D I have actually driven more than one vehicle with not throttle control using the ignition to control engine speed.Broken throttle cable at the carb on an old Triumph cycle.Jam a stick in the carb to hold the slide valve about 1/4 way open, kick start and using the right thumb to fan the kill button keeping engine speed reasonable for limp home riding.
The OP asked about starting his car's engine.Obviously he doesn't need to start the engine to do what he wants to do,but that is the question he asked...........

YES. Just hook up a vacuum cleaner to it and hook up a gravity fed gas line. The vacuum will most likely explode, but its just a little bump in the road.

A non feathered prop on a multi engine aircraft with a dead engine can severely over speed the prop and engine resulting in the prop shearing off it's shaft or the engine will sieze and the whole assembly tears from the mounts. Now you're not confused :D

I'd hold off on winterizing in January. It's too cold out there. I'd wait until March when it warms up a little.

You have a good point. We did it with the carb in place on a boat when we ran out of fuel out on a lake. It got us back to the landing no problem. Didn't think of no air control though. I'm betting you are correct.

I worked in a shop where they tried to run a diesel without its throttle controll ( which was weird, but that's how that thing was built )
It ran at WOT, with no way of shutting it off.

We stopped it by unscrewing the pressure lines coming off the pump.

I later heard it got stranded on the side off the road with a broken crank.

So can you run your engine without a carb?
    Yes.

    Does it accomplish anything?
    No.

Would it be a lot of work, and could it damage the engine?
    Yep.

I think you should go for it.

People have done dumber things for worse reasons....

So what we have learned from this is:

    1) Yes, and engine will fire with gas poured down a bare intake.

    2) Should you do it? No, it will rev too high.

    3) You do not need to start an engine to winterize it.

    4) Traditions Racing has a better avatar than me. :D

Some of the other advice was real, too......you just didn't like it.

  14. Metalshapers, I'm sure you know that diesels can " run away " even with throttle controls attatched. Happened to a old Detroit Diesel for our race boat hauler, it didn't end well.

  15. Thanks Don, her sister is in the backround. She " winterizes " the revolvers.............uh wait, I have a call coming in from Ryan.......................just a little reminder we are a family forum, "thanks buddy".

  18. You might want to make a block-off plate for the carb flange on the intake manifold. If this thing doesn't have a carb right now ... it might end up sitting a lot longer than you think it will. No sense giving the mice a nice place to live.

If the antifreeze in still good, I don't really see a reason to change it. If there is no antifreeze in the engine, you better make sure you drain the block of all water and not just the rad.

I agree with most of the others ... I would NOT try to start it without a carb, there really is no reason to start it. It could work in your favor if you throw a rod through the block though :D ... "gee honey the old 6 just died, can I have a V8?".

If you had a carb, you could drive it all winter.
    Carb = good.
    Spray bottle = bad.
    Fire = bad.

This could make for some awesome comedy, be sure to film it and post a YouTube video.

Do a Youtube search for "runaway diesel". Since there's no ignition to turn off, the only way to kill them is to choke them by blocking the intake.

  23. He really looks like that. Make me jealous, if I had a pair of those I would never have to leave the house.

Oh you were talking about the pistol weren't you. My bad. :D

You started it! Starting a thread here is alot like starting an engine without a carburetor, it revs like crazy and there's no control over it.

Honestly, it takes about 5 minutes to install a one barrel carb on a straight six. Why flirt with disaster?
