I wrote a big post awhile back about stuffing a 302 into an Econo. You might find some useful info in there, and more comments if you had Econoline in the title.

Anyway, the waterpump needs to match the timing cover. What year is the block, or more importantly, what year is the timing cover?

I used an 89 block and timing cover, so i used the reverse rotation WP for the 89. The serpentine system gives me a little more hp, and I don't run a mechanical fan. I used a slim SPAL electric fan and the pump and fan have barely enough room to clear each other.

If you go to the search part and type in (302 water pump) you will find what you want. I had pump-problems with mine also you need to make sure all your parts are v belt or serpentine. I had a mess and wasted a $100 or more on wrong parts Joe

They make two different pumps with the inlet on either the right or left side. I think the pump for the van is opposite of the car pump.

61 Econos never came with a v8, so he can choose whichever pump works with whatever radiator he has. FWIW, the stock radiator won't cut it, but one from a 240-powered Econo should do the trick if you don't live in the desert

Sorry....I don't know much about vans. Mine that I had in my '34 coupe must have been from a later model.

Just a note, depending on the source of your timing cover, not all 1989 302 pumps are reverse rotation. (ie: non-HO302).

You might try to find a pump timing cover & pullies off of a late model 5.0 Explorer. 2 1/2" shorter then any SBF pump I've ever seen. I used one on a 32 Ford and left me lots of extra room. Might need to grab the lower vibration dampner as well, mine the lower pulley was part of the dampner, not sure if something else will will adapt to the earlier dampner nor do I know about the balance issues swapping the dampner to early 302s. It would have to use a serpintine belt and no dought you would have to fab an alternator bracket but it was preety simple on mine, I put it up tight in front of the left valve cover, which would be perfect on a van. On the van the stock Explorer fan might work as well but it's a plastic spin on type but that wouldn't be any uglier the an electric fan would be. Oh, yeah, you have to use an electric fuel pump, it tucks the belt so tight to the block there is no room for a mechanical pump nor provision for one on the cover. Don't have pictures on this computer and my camara battery is dead but I could post pics of my setup later if you want.

You start to run into timing problems. The later drivers side pump intake has the timing pointer on the passenger side so the balancer is marked for that.An early passenger side pump intake has the pointer on the drivers side and the balancer is marked for that. The later engines have different pump rotations too, depending on V-belt or serpentine[reverse rotation].The covers will fit all year blocks but not all year pumps. You need to watch year engines as the balance changed in the 80s to 50 oz from the earlier 28oz balance.85 should be 50 oz so the Exploder front dress will work. +1 on 65Comet's comment......make sure that you have the 50oz harmonic and the 50oz flywheel (or flexplate)....Exploder stuff is still fairly cheap and pletiful...
