I've got an off-road H pipe and Borla exhaust on my 98 Mustang GT, and it sounds BRUTAL. Deep and throaty, but a nice low rumble at idle, roars to life when you jump on it. I receive many compliments on how good it sounds, in spite of the fact that it's totally stock.

The crossover (X or H pipe) is crucial in getting rid of the rapping/cracking sound when you let off. The shorter the H the better, which is what makes the X better. The crossover balances the exhaust pulses between the 2 pipes. Don't ask me to explain the theory, I don't understand it, but it does work. This goes for stock and modified engines. Keeping exhaust velocity down is also key to eliminating rapp. Stepping up to 2.5" pipes with good mandrel bends will help, as will mounting the mufflers towards the rear axle.

I have Cherry Bombs on my 383 Chrysler, but mine are much shorter and mounted under the front seat. 2.5" pipes with ****ty muffler shop bends, no crossover. It is VERY loud all the time and raps when i let off on the highway. I think it sounds great, but if that's not what you're going for then you need to try something else

My dad is runnin purple hornies behind a wicked 301, sounds mean. Kinda cackles. My favorite exhaust is generally no exhaust, just open headers. But that aint legal so I use Car Chemistry three chambered baffle. It slides into the header collector and bolts to the flange so it looks like open pipes. It really sounds mean. Has a growl to it. Also with those, you can change the loudness by changin the plugs on the baffle. They're great.

Like '57Joe, I have Borlas on my 4 liter V8 and they are the best all around exhaust that I've ever owned. Enought to get your attention at idle, very pleasing with no drumming at cruise, but get on it, and people know you're serious.

That said, I need a new exhaust system for my BOSS 302. I'm thinking of using 2 1/2" pipe, X-pipe, and , '60 Corvette style chambered pipes, and nothing else.

JohnnyO, what's the theory with the crayon? Aren't the pipes hotter closest to the engine? I had always read that crossovers and X pipes should be as close to the engine as possible, but I'm willing to learm.

  8. This should make them burble real well also. I love the sound of one that just has the burble at low speed.

Way back, Walker #21348, the original Corvair turbo muffler. 2 1/2" in & out. Go to muffler anytime I put headers on anything. It was a great sound compared to the Thrush, Cherry Bombs, Orange Peelers, Hornies, etc, eveyone else was running back then. Don't think that Walker # relates anymore though. Still run a set on my OT.

Check out the CHERRYBOMB VORTEX. Highest flowing muffler we offer while not allowing the torque to fall off and provides a deep mellow cruising tone w/o the inside drone. Don't worry we still have the good ol' gl*** pack too.

Wow, dredge up a 3 year old thread to talk about off topic cars

  13. Not to piss in anyone's corn flakes but the popping and cracking comes from exhaust leaks, you get air in the pipe and then it back fires when you let off of it. When I was a kid some of the fellas actually drilled a 1/8" hole in front of the muffler to make them do that.

A stockish big block run with a fair sized pipe like say 2.5" and long gl*** packs as far from the manifold as possible will have a real nice rumble to it. A normal setup would be the muccler just before the axle and then tail pipes all the way out the back. If it barks too much for you then put a bologna slice on the end of the tail pipe.
