That's $2,200.00 more than she had at the beginning of the day. I call it a win - win situation. Congrats!

  2. Wow, that thing looks clean.

I don't care that she had her son there, or that she could have refused your final offer and waited for a better one ... I still feel bad for the old lady :(. Just sayin'

They bought a house and the car was there. So it's actually 2,200 profit for them.

Good job! Congratulation. We have the same problem in Switzerland. To many rich people who distroy our hobby with high prices. They're not able to swing a hammer or tune up there cars, but buy like idiots because of some profit.

I want clear one thing up. This wasnt some senile old woman. She was sharp as a tack. and her Grandson and grandson-in-law were both there and negotiating. She lives in a $250,000+ house and drives a mercedes. I was by no means "taking away her lunch money". I offered to walk away because I couldnt pay their asking price, but said they would take my offer. I in fact left the Vette sitting next to it in the garage. I dont want people thinking I ripped them off. I offered what fit my budget and they took it. Enough said.

I don't understand the remarks about the lady being ripped off. He offered a price he felt comfortable with, and she accepted. Whats the problem? It's not like he lied about anything, or like he had it already sold for a huge profit. I don't get why anyone would rain on this guy's parade. He got a cool car for a good price.

In case people havent noticed, Boeing is leaving wichita and the money is drying up in the area. I'm not saying she couldn't have gotten more for it, but I doubt it would have been much.

What pisses me off is that if I would have left her out of the story and just said I got it from the grandson I would be getting an "at a boy" on getting a good deal.

But what should I expect around here. Guess we can count this thread closed....

Bottom line is you know you got that car at rock bottom price. How it went down is in material. Problem now is some HAMBer's will think this will be the new going price for a complete running Tudor A. Most of us that have been around awhile know this isn't the case. Smart Buyer / Stupid Seller on this one. Good for you and hope you do something cool to it down the road.

Screw that-keep this thread alive. Don't let a couple comments ruin it. The same people would have probably said "you paid too much" if you paid more. And it's also kinda funny because I doubt anybody would have done it any differently anyway.

Post more pics as you make progress on it. That banger looks like it will run with an afternoon of tinkering !

The banger is locked up tight. There is fuel in the oil. I dont know whether or not it can be saved with out a tear down.

Stupid seller? I don't know about that-I think an average price for a sedan, complete, but unknown condition and without ***le is around $3k +/- in my opinion. Paying $2200 means the buyer got a good deal and the seller sold something she got for free to the first person who offered to buy it and didn't have to deal with a bunch of yahoos. Good deal for both parties if you ask me.

Time for some thicker skin my friend. You know you can't win on here. If you get 50% on your side thats a win.

My thoughts, for what it's worth--I buy and sell guitars now and again. I look at ads all the time and typically don't haggle, if it's already a hell of a deal. If I know it's gonna sell fast, so I send an email with my number and say "if you can take x, I'll come buy it right now". If I get there and it's a POS, not at all as described, damaged, etc, I thank the person and explain why I'm not buying it. If they then ask what I'd give them for it, sometimes I make an offer, sometimes I don't. Sometimes they take the offer, sometimes they don't. I try not to rip anyone off and I went to them, so they aren't out ANYTHING by telling me no. I think you handled it fine. More than once I've gotten things by saying "I know it isn't what you are asking, but I can give you X for it today. If you can't take it, I understand." Cash is king and it seems nobody has any right now. That's why I have a fairly nice '50 Ford in the driveway.

Let the haters hate. They are just jealous....

They said yes to your price. Simple as that....That is how you establish FAIR MARKET VALUE.....NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT"S WORTH....I've bought a lot of cars for WAY less then FMV. It pays to have cash, know your ****, and stick by your guns, while being polite, and BE SERIOUS. That's how you buy cars for thousands of dollars off the asking price. I'll be honest, while I hate dealing with the CL flakes, they sure make it easy for me to get great deals. All you gotta do is show up.

Hope you have some fun with it or make a decent profit if you flip it. :)

Ebay prices maybe.....and not all the cars listed at those prices sell....

I know of a running and driving coupe that sold for $4000 and a tudor in similiar shape to the OP"s that went for $2000 with a ***le. I know of a RPU body that sold for $250 bucks. I know of a Phaeton that sold for 1000 bucks running and driving. all within the last two years or less.

I get the impression that the haters thought you could jump in and drive it away... but you never know. Seller thinks it's good, buyer has to ***ume it's bad.

Fair market value is what the seller and the buyer agree on. I think it worked out well for both parties.

Just got back home and saw this thread. Adam, you got a great car and handled it perfectly. As an aside, when i was at the machine shop today, one of the guys finds a Model A pickup on this farmers land where they hunt. It's been sitting 7 years. My friend, the machinist asked what the guy wants for it. Guy says give me a hundred and a case of Bud and it's yours.
    They're still out there

I think you did good. I don't know where that guy gets his s**** price. Last iron I sold was 280.00 a ton for good heavy tractor parts. He would have been lucky to get 150.00 for s****. stan

The thing of it is, I went expecting a rougher car. Took what money I could afford, and ended up spending every bit I had to buy it. I work really hard to provide a life and home for me and mine and the cars come second. I was truely walking away when they said they would take it. I promised them when I left I wouldnt chop it up and they were happy it was getting a new lease on life. I WILL stick to my word. I told them maybe a flathead and dropped axle but thats it. And thats how I'll build it. No z'd frame, no chopped top, no trashing the fenders, no billet junk. If I'm in the wrong I guess karma will make it right. I thought maybe I got this deal because I was livin right......

That's a $20K car (after you throw $17.5K into it) I agree on just too many people watching the TV auctions and taking what they see as gospel.
