Can someone help with this please? The backing plate mounting holes measure 3.500 x 2.416 which says it's an early large bearing axle. But the actual shape of the bearing housing is the same as a late Torino style . Have i got an oddball diff? Reason i ask is it's missing brakes and i've found some for an early large and not sure if they'll work. Thanks-Pic attached
Yep i know about the charts. I was just wondering if the fact that the actual outer shape was different would be a problem. See how those have only one 'flat' side? Maybe it's not an issue...
There was an oddball 1 year only (80-81) housing that was used right before they went to the 8.8" rear end that had weird dimensions. Torino housings have 3/8" bolts, so it is not a Torino end.
Looks about the same as the one I'm using. It come from a 1969 Mercury Maurader. If I'm not mistaken the holes were 3.5 2.375 on the flange. This is considered to be a big 9" Ford. Does the axle tubes step down?
I have one out in the back yard that looks the same. It came form a mid seventies Lincoln with disk brakes. They use a tapered roller bearing rather than the more common sealed radial ball bearing, The housing will fit the ball bearings you just have to remove the tapered bearing race, just take a mig or stick welder and run a bead on the bearing surface thery will shrink as they cool and slide right out. - just make sure you dont miss and weld them to the housing. JJ
The housing end and tapered roller bearing race looks the same as a 78-79 F-150 pickup. The Backing plates off any early large bearing should bolt on. You should be able to pull those races out and use a standard 3.150 OD sealed bearing. Hope this helps.
Moser engineering has a chart of nine housing ends in their catalog. Moser calls the housing end you posted a "Lamb/Symmetrical," which makes me think it is an aftermarket rearend housing that used disc brakes. Or it is an original housing with aftermarket welded on housing ends to accommodate disc brakes. Also, the housing ends resemble a late model Ford type.
