Yeah they are close to our plant there in Stuttgart. Nordrach is in southern Germany, but on a side note I will be at one of Junkers factories the same Junkers that made bombers during the war.

I spent Christmas week around Regensburg and I never got that far west, but I was really impressed with Germany; its a beautiful place. Don't let any moss grow, be sure to get out everyday to see something. I loved visiting the little Gasthaus' all over the place and the food is great. If you have your own fridge and so forth, make your own meals and buy the stuff marked "bio". You will be surprised how good you are eating. We had a kitchen in our flat and it worked out great. Food is cheap, especially compared to Australia. Petrol is not at about 1.35 Euros a litre. If you can get a station wagon or "estate", do so if there are more than two in your party, trust me. I had an Opel Astra wagon with a 5 speed manual and it would run at 180 kmh on the Autobahn no problem. If you aren't p***ing someone, stay out of the left lane. Be warned, trucks are limited as to how fast they can go, so if you see one pulling into the p***ing lane and you are at 160 or so, you better start baking because he is only doing about 90+, dangerous.

Go visit France and Switzerland, you will regret it if you don't. We went into Czechoslovakia and Austria and are pleased we did.

If you are going to the Mercedes Museum, then a must is the Porsche museum, it also in Stuttgart. Probably a 30 to 45 minute drive away is the largest Bugatti collection at the Cité de l’Automobile Museum in Mulhouse, France. highly recommended. Prost!

I will be going for work so during the week I stay around the town, but on the weekends I will be free to travel. It appears to be about 30 to 40 min. from Strasbourg France. Around 2 hours from Stuttgart about 2 and a half from Frankfurt. It should be fun.

I did two trips this summer for work, was in Stuttgart and Aachen. The Porsche museum is a must see. A trip up to St Goar and along the Rhine River is a cool drive, many castles.

There's a social group called Das Deutsche HAMB. You might check over there and see what they recommend.

I visit my twin brother every five years. He lives in a small hamlet near Baden-Baden. Some of the places we visited: the Strasbourg Cathedral (famous for the world's largest clock), the Black Forest (famous for it's cuckoo clock factory and Grimm's fairy tales of Hansel & Gretal/ Little Red Riding Hood/ Snow White/ Rumplestiltskin/ Cinderella), St. Martin (famous for it's wine festivals), Ritterburg Castle (800 years old) only 10 miles from my twin's house in Bad Bergzabern (famous for its mineral/thermal baths), Badepack Swimming Park in Wort (variety of pools with simulated 4' waves and slides). All within a couple hours drive from Nordrach. Enjoy.

Take a weekend, go south and spend time in Munich and visit the BMW Museum - it's near where they had the '72 Olympics, then get to the Deutsches Museum, and wrap it up at a bier halle.

I took lots of weekend trips by train out of Hanover in the spring-summer of '88 - leave in the evening, sleep on the train and wake up in Rotterdam, Stuttgart or Berlin, explore for Saturday-Sunday and then repeat the process to get home. Best time of my life up to that point.

Take a trip down to the Allgau and the town of Fussen. The world famous Neuschwanstein Castle is there, but its a beautiful area of lakes and mountains. Or head south, Switzerland isn´t that far from you. It´s expensive at the moment though! As mentioned, the Porsche and Mercedes museums in Stuttgart and the Bugatti museum in France and also the technology museums at Sinsheim and Speyer.

The sinsheim auto museum is really cool! Maybe 1 hour north of Stuttgart.

300 cars, 20 locomotives, planes, race cars, american cars, motorcycles, military stuff, stationary engines, caliopees, etc. Really good place, give yourself maybe 4 hours to tour it! I have been to all of the other german museums mentioned, and this was my favorite.

Four hours? And the rest! The other part of this collection is in Speyer. They have a submarine parked out the back there.

I plan on taking plenty of pictures and sharing them, I will see if I can get some of the Junkers factory I will be working in also, these grinders that ZF has bought for making rack bars for rack and pinion steering gears are very complex from what I understand.

If you like American beer dont drink any German beer, you will be spoiled and think "Bud" "IS" horse pee... EVERY town has its own brewery, you cant go wrong. Chrystalweisen, Heffeweisen, all good brother. I spent a tour (4 years) in the Bavarian area, beautiful country, nice people! Enjoy and have a drink on me! Oh by the way, Germans drink thier beer warm...(but you can get it cold)...
