I'm from San Diego. I know.

I swept my frame cause I saw Bob do it and I liked it. He didn't invent it. But he inspired alot of guys lately.

I can assure you sweeping my frame was NOT easy. It was a bitch. And in my mind it was worth it. I didn't take any shortcuts or "used what I had", it's the only way to make my car look this way. You may hate it but such is life.

Execution is everything. I never noticed either.

The wrong kind of Z, is one that advertises it's presence.

I didn't see much discussion of "scrub-line" problems. Seems like it would impossible to have sufficient ground clearance for safety with some of these frames. anyone here ever peel-up a manhole cover or tear off some suspension/crossmembers etc. looking cool is always the goal, being broken down isn't.

My '34 was built in the late 50s with a double Z frame and then channeled. Double Zs are like Ole Miss being 2-2 in the SEC.

Both grandfathers (long ago) confirm seeing it done from the late '40s on up. So it is nothing new, if not particularly common.

I agree with SB. Execution is everything.

This is a really informative thread. I have been wondering about this as well, if it was a modern trend and how much it was done in the past. Its nice to see the old pics as well.

As to scrub line, That's as much a function of tire and wheel selection as chassis design. I have about 4.5" sweep in front on a 4" dropped I-beam with the back Z'd about 13 inches and I still have 5" of ground clearance. I run 16" rims with 5.00 Firestones and some generic 7.50s. If both tires aired down at once on either end, I would still have air. Stay away from foolish designs used for he sake of appearance and function will lead form.

A double Z is a very functional alternative to a heavy channel. When the Z is hidden behind the firewall you would have to get down on your hands and knees to see it. This way you could have the look of a deep channel like they did back in the old days but still have some head room in your car.
