Can you cut the glass on a '53 Chevy sedan?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Brickster, Jun 16, 2005.

  1. Brickster-This car is chopped 3" with the stock rear gl*** uncut......It is moved forwards and tilted-then the area behind was re shaped, probably could have done 4".....Real similar chop/situation as your chevy......it has a satisfactory line[I think]:)
by moving it up or forwards you eliminate the need to even cut the gl*** and the shape of the rear post and roof skin is easier to get lookin right too!

there is or was a guy on ebay selling remanufactured gl*** front and back. I talked to him once and he said he could make a back windshield that wasn't tempered so that you could cut it. that's what I'm gonna do for my merc. if I can find him again..Do some research on new gl***....

No suggestions, though you got us on the trick question. There was a post a while back about someone making laminated backlites.

I was shown a realy cool trick for cutting gl*** with tin snips but I don't know if it works on toughened or laminated gl***. If you totally submerge the gl*** under water you can cut it with snips or large shears. It's how we cut some rear view mirror gl*** to shape

    Okay,

Not to start a manhunt, but that blue 53, are there any further detailed pictures? I'd love to see it in finished state, did he replace the stainless trim? Anyway, let me know.

I just finished working on a chopped 54 Chevy with a chopped wrap around rear gl***. You cant cut tempered gl*** but you can cut laminated gl***, which they sell brand new for around $300 bucks, like someone mentioned earlier in this thread. I had Starlight Customs, which is in the Los Angeles area, cut about 2" off the gl*** and then I made the window opening fit the cut gl***. Once I had my opening welded up, I layed it down as far as it would go, not letting the corners dip below the beltline.Im pretty happy how it came out and lucky I had a place that would cut gl*** locally

ive heard of using a front windsheld with the same curve as the rear and cutting it from that. I see it working for a smaller window than one that is full width. I have taken a tempered wing window and slowly grand them down using water for the heat. hold the grinder in spot to long and you get a bunch of small peices

Ok i will bite on this on. I do not recomend this but Yes the plasma cutter can work but 75% of the time it will explode on you. Been there done that. You will need to preheat the gl*** slowly to about 200 degs then make your cuts fast. If you have made it this far your not out of the woods yet. Now Cool it off very slowly or it will explode. If you are thinking of trying this be very carfull as the gl*** can fly every where just like a bomb went off.

The only recomended way is to have the temper baked out of it without deforming the gl***. Then cut it. I usally do not have it retempered due to money issues and the chance of deforming it.

go for plastic back window. dont just lean the stock back window back it looks bad. the corners end up below the belt line and most of the time u get a hump on the cat walk, and the c pillar looks funny at the end because it goes from wide at the bottom and then very narrow up top making a kink. it just never really looks good.

Here's my buddy Dustin's chopped '53. It's the only pic I have of the back but he is using the stock wrap around rear gl***. I can't remember for sure if he had to cut the back gl*** or not but I do know that he for sure cut the front gl*** himself with one of the HF diamond cutting wheels, a lot of patience and a ton of water.

thats what i dont care for when people use the stock back window. theres a big hump on the bottom the window on the package tray. on that one he tilted the window and beltline and when he did that he lifted te beltline with the window above where the beltline should be. the beltline should stay flat and not pivot up. other wise its a real nice loooking chop
