Yesterday I saw a Chopped Merc for sale online. The guy says it is the original car used during filming American Graffiti. If any HAMBer see's this and is thinking about dropping the 95K this guy wants for it I would suggest double checking the facts. I have. For what I know you can check my site.

Just like the 500+ Clowns who claim that they own the "original" American Graffiti Deuce coupe.

To anyone who knows the least bit about the original car in the movie it's all too obvious that his isn't the movie car and in a lot of ways is a lot nicer car. But there is probably another fool somewhere who would bite off on it thinking that it was the real deal.

Nothing to add about the fake Merc, but I was checking out your blog and I have the original fuzzy picture of the Merc sitting behind fence beside the open wheeler in my "box of pictures". Cool! I finally remembered where it came from. A truck driving buddy of mine brought it back from one of his trips. He took the picture out on the coast and didn't have a clue it was the Graffiti Merc.

Did you contact him and ask him about what do***entation he has as proof? Where did you see it online? It might be fun if we bombard him with questions?

Rudy's Green Flame is owned by Don Garlits, it's at the museum, it doesn't have that awesome inspired by Robert Williams' paint job anymore.

That 'American Graffiti' Merc isn't even close to the original.

    Great site, Mr. Graffiti.

Just Googled and found that ad. The chop isn't even close. Won't fool anybody familiar with the original Merc. Where is the real one now?

That is awsome! I love stories like that and when dealing with this movie and all the cars seems like there are thousands of them.

I'm sorry but anyone who spends time and money building a clone of that car really needs to get a real life. There were two or three 32 clones and one Model A claiming to be a clone at the Portland roadster show last year and it was rather laughable except for the one that was in the booth with Gene Winfield and Candy Clark.

i enjoyed the movie when it came out and even have a copy that gets watched once in a while but have no desire to have a clone of any car that was ever built.

Way Cool. That is a great story. I have never been to the Museum. I have meet Don before. We had a great talk about a bunch of stuff but I thought I was going to loose my voice from speaking so loud. All thoses years of open headers have taken a toll on Don's hearing.

    ********. You either get it,or you don't. You don't,and that's fine.;)

The scene when John uncaps the coupe and backs out of the shop, then runs over the curb still gives me goosebumps to this day.

I can understand someone who wants to drive Milner's car bad enough to build one.

Yep Mike,Glen,Dave,Ken and Clay I have not talked to most of them since yesterday. They are building a wicked 55 to complete the circle. They are pretty big on the show circuit touring with the stars of the film. I am trying to get them to do a show out here in the midwest.

If I ever build a 32 5 window, I may just be tempted to paint a cross between "piss yellow and puke green"!

That car along with the California Kid brought hot rodding out of the "resto-rod" area. I think it also helped a lot of guys get into, or back into hot rodding. Sure, the car has a few things on it that most people don't feel are "right" but it's the at***ude of the car (as well as the driver) in the movie that I think people try to recapture with the clones. After all, don't we all wish we were as cool as John Milner?! :)
I think it's amazing that after almost 40 years guy's are still building clones and tributes to that car.
No matter how many clones there are, and how many things aren't "right" on it, it will always be the "*****inest car in the valley!" to some people!!

Ummm...I may be wrong, but I think this car is the one Bo Hopkins had built. I read the ad and I don't see where they claim it is the actual AG Merc, but I can certainly see how someone might think that. I saw pics on the HAMB several years ago where this very car was kind of inferred to be the actual car, and Bo had it built to be a "sort of" clone.

EDIT: Evidently I need to learn to read more carefully because it does say it plain as day. I still think this is Bo's car from a few years back.

Next EDIT: Maybe I should quit posting. I just checked out your excellent blog and found out the truth and the whole truth, complete with excellent pictures and the whole story.
