KOOLKAT and I worked thru some Day of the Drags video today - completed a VHS-to-DVD transfer and made some .MOV files of a few highlights including Mike's crash. Problem is the .MOV's are 140MB each (!), and every attempt I've made to convert them to .AVI's and/or compress them has at least tripled their size.

Anyone got some pointers? These highlights are cool - they need to be posted for all to see - how can we get them out there?

how long do the clips run?....it's probably frame size and length that are killing you 62buford....your going to have to edit out some stuff and change the frame size.....it's not as cool but the option exists to let people download a zip file with the video instead of live streaming....but 140 meg is not do-able for most folks....i'm talking 30-40 meg for the zip...not sure what an average size is for streaming video...let me check around....
( damn...damn...damn... want to see the clips too! )

The clips are only 8-20 seconds long, 320x240, and 15 fps. Shrinking the window didn't help the size much and made the video harder to watch. I have NO idea why they are so friggin' huge, but it's killing me. I'm really eager to post these on behalf of KOOLKAT - it's good stuff!

    Any input is welcome.

Thanks RIC - these link to the tools I have been using, but did give me some ideas. I got Mike's crash posted using some unorthodox measures that I'm not sure I can do again (?!).

Mac or Pc based ..I use it for MAc ...I use it to compress all my stuff for the web...
I have compressed 3minute clips and it was under 20 megs...

it has alot to choose from as far as Modom ..Bband Hi+Lo...Etc..

thers also Media Cleaner witch is really good....

I have made several clips for the web from Digital Video footage. These files are BIG..3 mins is about 500meg.

I use virtual dub to shrink em down for the web. The settings I use are

    Filters
De-interlace (gets rid of horizontal banding you see in some clips - TV's are interlaced computers are not)
2:1 reduction. Decreases the frame pixel size to 320 x 240 or thereabouts.

    Video Compression
DIVX codec or just use the Microsft mpeg 4. Do some test and play with the settings

    Audio compression
MP3 at about 3k per second Mono.

This will give you a very veiwable file (at 24 frames/sec) that is less than 10 meg for 3 mins

I've used Flix and it seems to work ok for making small files. Not as clear as some of the others but small.

You can put the movies in a webpage easy too.
I used it on my goofy homepage and it works nice.

Good stuff guys - thanks. I believe I got it figured out, but I'll play with the audio compression settings and the de-interlacing to see if I can tweak it. I did finally use the MPEG4 codec after trying most I could find. I'm using Rad Video Tools for the conversion. I stuck with the 320x240 size, but shrinking it to 240x160 is an option.

    Thanks again.
