Hi gang, I had a 1951 Chevy Deluxe all original 4 door given to me the other day. It seems to have been sitting since the early 80s and I have been trying to start it so I can figure weather I want to keep it intact or part it since I have a 51 coupe. I tried to start it with a remote switch to the starter but it was a no go. I removed the starter and was able to get the solenoid going but the starter seems to be dead. I dont want to spend much trying to start it so Ive been searching for a cheap starter and came across one for 43 bucks at Advance Auto Parts, a Beck/Arnley part number 187-6167. They list this same starter to fit the 216/235 from 49 to 61 but from what I understand from searching the forum is that all 12 volt post 55 cars had a different starter/flywheel combo. Oreillys list this same starter for the same year ranges as well. Any thoughts on if this will work at all? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
I don't understand the same starter being listed for 49-61... unless the drive gear/pinion on the starter is some compromise that will mesh with either ring gear...?? guessing.
This one has me scratching my head. Maybe I should go the safe route and look for a starter rebuild kit? I would hate to give up my core if the Advance starter won't work but that's onlt 10 bucks and the Advance starter could be returned I guess. I was hoping there was someone that has tried this starter.
It's most likely the wrong starter. And you can't swap any parts between the 6v and 12v starter, everything is a different size. YOu can take the starter apart and see how it looks inside. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/index.htm .
