History Need history/photos of this 60's Fla A/Altered

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hammers&Hatchets Garage, Jan 28, 2012.

  1. Picked up this car from a gentleman who purcased it from the owner/driver before he p***ed away. Hyler Craft from Jacksonville, Florida built and drove this car in the early 60's. Originaly I bought the car for the Pontiac engine to use in my 63 Tempest project, but it's too original to part out. Since I've decided to keep it complete, I'm having a hard time finding any info/photos. Fellow HAMBers, need your help.

  4. I read the bio a few days ago. Looks like most of the hardware on the car came home in Hylers lunch pale. All millitary spec fittings, nuts and bolts. The bio gives great info about Hyler, but no info about his drag racing.

Any fotos of the frame ... ?

  10. The plan is goto the Hot Rod reunion as a static display.
I would like to have it running for the meltdown, but since it's a push start car it's not as easy as it seems. I need to see about minimun safety requirements to make a p***. Currently have no plans to modify car except new tires.

The Heads on that motor are worth good money to someone with a 62 SD Catalina. planned on going to WOW in Indy looking foward to checking it out!:D

  17. I will push start you with my Model A truck. I run my Fiat with no updates or modifications. Old school vintage race car. Don't make excuses not to be there.:D

  18. You're correct on the heads. Just spent big money on 980 heads, 859 intake with carbs and air cleaners for my 63' Lemans project.

  19. Not makin' excuses, INLAW MODEL A. Just prefer to have it running for the meltdown. Bottom line the car will be at the event. Not Interested in adding any bars that ruin the look of the car. Question for you, what tires are you running front & rear? Also, besides a helmet what personal gear and certification is required?

  20. That is the best news I have heard today!
I have the original Pirelli's from 66 on the front. The rear has older Mickey Thompson slicks. I have the originals for display but they are hard as a rock.
I don't have the extra bar either. The ch***is is as built by Lakewood in '64.

8 Simple rules that everyone (14 seconds and slower) should be able to follow:
    1. Seat belts
    2. All lugnuts installed
    3. Metal oil pressure lines
    4. No fuel pressure gauges in the cabin without an isolator
    5. Dual throttle return springs
    6. Non-gl*** coolant overflow can, and no antifreeze
    7. No more than 12″ of rubber fuel line total
    8. Closed toe shoes and long pants

Here is some info on my Fiat: http://meltdowndrags.com/?page_id=36

  21. Oh ya, Please RVSP,

We want to provide an early list to the Dragstrip of cars attending the 2012 Meltdown Drags. To prove our point….there is an interest in keeping the MD just as it is.

Please email us with your name, Car – Make, Model, Color…..and what state your coming from.
If you or a friend have NOT already raced at the MD….please email a photo for approval.

  22. Preregistered for the Meltdown. Showing at the 62' Autorama in Indy this weekend. Starting a check list needed to get the engine running. Have some leads on photo's from back in the day.

  23. I want a picture of my Fiat next to you racing or at least next to each other on the starting line.

What a great find. I really like your altered. I just hand lettered, gold leafed and pinstriped the body to a b-altered that ran in the northeast from 1961-70. Here's a couple pic's of it. Reminds me a little of yours.

What I have been told is the car ran at Fonda Speedway's dragstip in New York. That is the track that Shirley Muldowney started her racing career at. Apparently the two of them raced several times in the competion eliminator cl*** for all the marbles. The altered also ran Lebanon Valley, South Glens Falls and Hoosick Falls dragstrips. Closer to the late sixties or 1970 the car went to some better tracks in New England with better facilities and better traction. With the added grip they kept breaking the pinion yoke and other rearend parts. Apparently the smaller tracks had dirt infields which kept traction to a minimum, so when the car hooked they started breaking parts. The car was always based out of Caroga Lake, NY in the adirondacks First owned buy the Shutts family. It started life as a Anglia G***er. They then removed the Anglia body and and added the t-bucket body and moved to the altered cl***. The car was then sold to a guy named Don Baker from the same town. His son ran the car until he died in a car accident unrelated to drag racing. The father kept the car until about 10 years ago when he sold it to a old friend and crew member who I did the paint work for.

Great score Hammers&Hatchets! I am glad to hear that you are planning on keeping it together rather parting it out. It's nice to see a piece of Jacksonville racing history is going to survive, it sounds like it is going to be in good hands. If you are still looking for info on the car I can ask around some of the old timers that I know that would have been racing back then.
