I have a leak from the dipstick tube on my turbo 350. I bought a replacement tube with O-ring, but when I insert the tube the O-ring pushes up the tube. Is there a seal that I can buy for it. Part# would help. I'm not opposed to a "home remedy" that anyone has tried either. Thanks as always
Just put the o-ring back on and put a little grease to lube it up before you put it in, there are no other seals that I'm aware of
Clean the bore in the transmission good, clean the tube good, put "3M Right Stuff " liberally on the tube, insert, and let it set up for a day or two. It will never leak again. That stuff is amazing. Don
You can replace the "o" ring seal with a "top hat" rubber boot seal. If you scroll ebay for a TH350 dipstick tube top hat seal you will see one listed for $8.99. I believe TCI and Hughes sells a top hat boot seal also for the TH350.
The turbo 350 has a lot of internal pressure that gets worse with age,, the fluid is pushed up the tube and will push the dipstick up enough to allow fluid to escape. This problem is usually caused by the vent tube being plugged.
Need the correct dip stick tube to work with that seal just to be totally clear. Trans needs to be checked at operation temp, 160 degrees min. pan level front to back side to side. Full line on scale should be even with pan gasket flange, and yes the vent needs to be clear.
Tried the teflon tape route, it seems to be holding. if that fails Ill get The right stuff! Thank you fellas. Ive been closing up all the little leaks so I can drive this F1. I dont mind "marking my spot"( Harley Term) but I dont want to leave a puddle wherever I go
Resurrecting an old thread here. Due to space limitations Im thinking about putting an axcess cover in the floor and shortening the dipstick to about 7 inches. The problem Im having now is the firewall is in the way and the lokar dipstick tube bends and puts uneven pressure on the base where it mounts into the trans causing a leak. Is this possible or will the th350 converter drain and cause the fluid to leak out the top of the dipstick?
The newer style multi-lip, or "top hat" style seal should be available at most GM parts departments for about $3.50. Ask them for part #1259475. I think you've got that half right. The o-ring style seal should only be used with the older style tube which has a rolled groove in the tube to locate the seal properly. The newer style multi-lip seal was used in production on a tube without the groove, but it will also work with the older grooved tube.
I haven't seen that top hat seal in person ..but in just looking at the picture I can't see how you can slip it on a tube that was an o ring style and have it work...in other words...the o ring style disptick tube is nearly the size of the hole in the trans...no room for the top hat seal...looks too thick.
Thought I'd seen them done this way at work years ago. But if the lower part of the tube is a different diameter then it could be a bit of a stretch. I'll edit my previous post.
