car broke down HELP ANYONE?

  1. My bet, and I really want to know if I'm right, because I've had this happen before when you get these hot:

Cam ain't turnin' because the gears have stripped.

Reason?? The ultra hot oil was too thin to adequately lubricate the bearings, causing a partial sieze - enough to strip the (probably very) worn gears, one of which is fibre, if I recall correctly.

Part of the whole diagnosis problem was/is lack of communication.

We never heard that spark was ascertained.
Fuel was in the filter, but we don't know that it is pumping.
    No compresion test was done.
The owner got the idea that it was a head gasket, no one else stated such, and no evidence for same, yet he is out there changing the head gasket without even a compression check.

    Hope he has fun.

Oh, yeah, based on my experience with a Chrysler of similar vintage, 70 mph is spinning that engine awful damn fast, as just on 80 was about top speed, so guessing around 3,500 rpm, which is too fast for a long-stroke flattie six, IMHO.

Points?? ignition coil? check to see everything is dry in distributor.
Cam gear??? They have teeth that can break. Maybe the gear stripped?

knowing what he knows, $5 says he never gets it running again.

brand new robert shaw thermostats made in america and cost $10 more can go bad in about 1/2 hour after you install them. trust me on that.

i swear this guy is my kid brother. he charged a lady 500 bucks to do a head gasket job on a saturn just to have it run like crap still. i told him to replace the map sensor and it ran like a charm.

some folks hafta learn the hard way.

ok guys, it runs..... but, it ran ok all last night (we went over EVERYTHIUNG, and got it runnin fine, some electrical bull, but nothing major, and somehow chokes got SCREWED up like as far as placement.... ).... anyways, it ran ok last night, a little boggin, byut nothing major, then today, we wnt to driuve it, ran decent, still a lil bad, then started in running HORRIBLE.... i mean bogging like MAD, seeming like its running on like 3 cyllinders... yes, there is oil pressure... so, since exhaust is a lil (read VERY little) white, and oil seems to be a TAD (read TINY TINY TINY bit) thinned down, i think once it cools down, im gonna do that head gasket... (100 here right now).... and we will see... could still be in distributor i guess... but in all honestly, we went over that, and it seemed ok... if i had the dough, i would get new points, cap, etc.... and try all that... any ideas now that its drivin around boys?

OK, Car overheated, coolant went everywhere. Have you taken the distributor cap off and cleaned all the antifreeze and moisture out of the dizzy? If it got doused good it may explain why it quit and why it won't start. Anti freeze in a dizzy is a bitch to clean out. Carb cleaner may be your best bet. Make sure the ignition is off as it is flamable. Get it good and clean and maybe even change points. I speak from experience.
    Hope it helps,
    George

Looks like I got in a bit late. Glad you got it running.

So, your telling us that a head gasket is cheaper then a set of points??? You do what ever you think you have to, but I would change the points, condenser, dist cap and rotor, and the oil and see where your at. I think I would probably give the carb a good cleaning with carb cleaner too.

Once you pull the head and if you can not find any place the gasket has blown out, you will be in the same position as you are now, except you will also have to buy a head gasket. I would think the head gasket would have to be blown through to cause your problems. A simple compression test would certainly show if that were the case but, if you would rather pull the head to find that out, go for it. Gene

I keep thinking it is an ignition problem.. maybe the cap is cracked, bad condenser? What does the points look like maybe they need filed or better yet replaced. is there oil in the dizzy?? I had a Ford six drive me crazy due to a bad dizzy seal. Coils can cause weird shit sometimes when they get hot. Borrow a known good one and slave it in. check and see if there is a ground wire inside the dizzy if so are the contact areas clean. Have you been saying your prayers to the great god of Hot Rodding??
I have been reading this post and you have not really said what you have checked other that you think the head gasket is bad and it spins over using the starter before you got it running and then it ran like Dog shit. Usually missing a step while checking out the basic shit will drive you crazy.

    Good luck
