If that is the yellow/red one with the horrid door hinges, yes. I think I blocked the wheels out of my memory as well.
Are there TWO or THREE Riley V8 powered '32 Roadsters? The Don Orosco car is PERFECT and the one to judge the others against. There was one project featured on the HAMB last year, a great collection of original speed parts with Vintage dirt track DAYTON wires. That looked like a great project IMO. Just wonder if the yellow/red one is that car or a third?
I don't know enough about the Riley conversions but the guy with the cream colored one said his was one of two and the other engine was in Speedy Bill's museum. I thought Orosco had one too?
kept looking at this thing and really couldnt find a thing wrong with it (maybe no trunk) but it was great! i just loved it alot
That engine was purchased from Don Orosco. It is actually one of 3 left in the world. One in Speedy Bills museum one in this car and the other is top secret. The cream cars engine is the only running example.
Personally I like the concept that the car has to debut at GNRS to be in the running for the award. Some of those cars will see plenty of miles after the indoor show season is over and we get to see them at the Portland Roadster show. At least they may get back to the concept of build it, show it for a season and then drive the wheels off it until you wear it out and build it again.
Can anyone confirm something for me? In the drivers side shots of the Brazio car I have seen what I think is a dark blue '34 roadster highboy with black steel wheels in the background. If I wasn't such a computer retard, I'd cut out and paste the picture. But, does that car belong to Squeege's here in Phoenix, and is it in contention for the big trophy? 'Cause if it does, some of my work is on that! How cool is that?! Sucks that I had to cancel my trip at the last minute...
Without a doubt both the SoCal car and the Brizio cars are both stunning but my favourite would have to be the Sylvester III 32. A close 2nd favourite is this
Right here on the HAMB. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=664648&highlight=mystery+car+update
Yes that 34 is built by Squeege's and it was really nice!! it was in my top 3 for AMBER for sure..Silvester , Brizio and Squeege's (in no order) But the So Cal car won and no the big roadster thing didn't (THANK GOD) at least there pointing in the right direction!!!
I've seen the Howerton car at different stages throughout the build... I was excited to see it finished. But now that it is done, it's kinda disapointing to see the final exterior finish and scheme. I mean, a single scalop and a big "3" on the door? Maybe there is some personal reason for it... but of not, those two things miss the mark. The only other hiccup that stands out is the turtle deck. I know when you build a car such as this, you don't want to make it seem "Ford"... or any other brand car for that matter. But the bustle on this thing could have benefited if it would have followed an abrupt end, like a Ford, rather than all round like it is... Sam
I thought so too, but when it won something in another class I was told that it wasn't and AMBR contender but was given preferential parking due to the win last year for Squeege - not sure which is right ......
Rex - The sign clearly stated that the "Thanks" were given in Alphabetical order, I don't think Bill was slighting Jackie by any means. In fact when he accepted the trophy for the AMBR, he very graciously gave major credit due to Jackie for his vision, dedication, craftsmanship etc.
I'd have been very happy to see either the Howerton Roadster or Brizio '32 take the "silverware". Both are just about as traditional as you get for this prize and quite stunning.
I don't know what the design team had in mind but the car looked like a mid 1920's Dodge when I saw the first photos. That isn't a negative, it looks like a Dodge a great car in the 1920's. Bob
Great AMBR choice. They were all deserving. Great show, the best in years by far. The Marmon just didn't go far enough, but even it was a big improvement over past winners.
I think you nailed it. FWIW, I just read that it won the AMBR... great news! I think we are past the whole Smoothy Look AMBR thing... and on to a new era based on tradition! Sam
It's nice to see the AMBR heading in the right direction as compared to previous years. I overheard that the Howerton / Lindig Roadster has 500 miles on it. If that is so, for a car of that caliber, having been recently completed, its pretty awesome.
Squeeg told me Saturday afternoon that Doug didn't have the blue roadster in competition for the AMBR award, but they do plan to bring a new car to compete for it next year. -Ryan .
