I bought a 52 saratoga complete. The guy I bought it from swore it ran( friend of family) a few months ago. I tried to hot wire it and realised the wire going from dist. to coil was burnt. I asuming from them running it on 12 volts. Does anyone know what points and condensor will fir this single point dist. that can run on 12 volts? part #'s or I.E. 65 dart??? Thanks Dan
There is a simple solution. Find the thread on here from GMC Bubba. You'll end up using a 70's type electronic dizzy, GM module and a different intermediate shaft that you can get from HOt Heads in NC. I used this setup on my 52 chrysler hemi. It looked like a stock unit, but was actually electronic ignition.
I will def. go that way. But I want to fire the engine up to see if it runs. If it runs good, I might roll the dice and not tear it down. The odometer only read 42,500 and the car looked low miles. But it sat in a barn and rotted the floors from mice dragging in stuff. it still had the inspection stamps on the firewall.
Sorry, but why not just fire it up with the six volt system? If one wire is already burnt, the twelve volt conversion probably wasn't done right anyways. As far as getting it to run, a six volt battery and the points and condenser are all available right at NAPA
Simple solution. The engine will start on 12 volts and not harm the points. Once it is started it needs a resistor to drop voltage down to 6/8 volts to protect the points. This is the way most 12v point type ignitions systems work.
there is no such thing as 6 volt or 12 volt points. It only matters at the coil. Most 12v cars started on 12v during crank but dropped to 6 at the coil through a resistor when you let off the the button/key. So get the right points for your engine. Worst case you burn another set using strait 12v a the coil but it will last long enough for you to determine if its going to run
I called napa and carquest the only points they show is for daul point dist. Does anyone know if they are the same points?? Thanks Guys for your help
12 Volts Did Not Burn the wire or Fry the Points, I'll Bet someone left the Key on & the points were closed & Thas what burned the wire. Point cars arent like a new car, The points make an Elctric contact, if the key is left on & points are closed you ARE going to Burn Shit up. There is NO NEED to replace the Distributor with all the GM conversion Shit & that Crap Hot Heads sells ........ LEAVE THE STOCK DIZZY IN IT ! Points are available but if you MUST switch to Electronic, Contact GMC BUBBA here on the HAMB & have him Convert your ORIGINAL Housing. Ohh Yeah .... All My HEMI's have had a MAGNETO !
Ok I went back and looked at the dist. closer. It appears it is a dual point. There is 2 studs that the points pivot off of. Only one set in it though. I will get the ones from napa and go from there. Gotta love going behind jacklegs...
