About 4 years ago a buddy bought a 40 chevy truck for parts and these old lowbacks were in it . well i went to get them and someone had welded them in directly over the fuel tank so i just kinda forgot about them . I just picked up a new dewalt cordless sawzall for work and figured id go get the seats and sure enough they were still there so i had to cut the lower end of the mounts on the seats to get them out .

now for the question , what are they out of ? Have this neat chrome band over the top and down the sides and they fold in and away . Anybody got a guess ?

Neither the Corvair or GTO ones had the full hoop around the top, that only came on full size cars like Impala and Grand Prix. There were also two different widths, wider in the earlier cars and narrower in the later cars. A pic of the underside showing the springs underneath will determine the year.

    Definitely 61-65 GM though

The seat backs at the very top measure 22 inches across and in the middle of the seat back measure 22 1/2 inches . The seat bottom measures 231/2 inches wide at the widest part.

I'll say 62-64 Impala. The lesser cars didn't have chrome all the way around the top, only up the sides and I think Corvair only had chrome on one side, the inside piece was painted.

64 Oldsmobile. Starfire if they are leather. Those early to mid 60's seats are all the same size, small car seats fold at an angle, big car fold straight front.

  13. Hmmm I need to find something like those for my Mercury, I'm in Chicago if anyone is nearby with a set like those (or plainer). PM me.

I do believe the seats are all the same width. The difference being how they fold. As well as the trim. I have a pair in my 51 convertible. I pulled them from a Corvair in a local yard. They fold straight forward and not at an angle. As was stated, they have a hockey stick type chrome side trim on the outer sides of the seats and a painted trim on the inner sides of the seats. The Corvair had no console so the seats were sitting right next to each other. The larger cars had a console between the seats which took up the space and brought the seats out towards the doors more. Again, I'm pretty sure you might find the seats in the GTOs, Impalas, Corvairs and the Olds to be the same size.

I had a pair of Corvair buckets at a swapmeet. A guy gladly paid me $175 for them. He said they were out of a 62 Impala. The only other difference might be the seat tracks. And don`t forget the Buicks too.

  16. Many different GM vehicles used essentially the same seats with minor differences in upholstery and trim. This was true in later years as well when Vegas and Camaros used the same bucket seats.

I`ll go threw my parts catalogs later to see which make and model offered that design in the vinyl covering.

If you're looking for lowbacks that are plain, you might look at repros for CJ5 buckets. I just bought a pair of them for my Austin as I needed something simple and small. The CJ seats are only 19" wide, and very simple design. Priced at under $130 at Summit new without sliders, so reasonable too!
