New to this digital age, and need recommended camera in the $200-375 range for taking close up, detailed pix of fine pin stripe, 1/64th scale toys, interiors, ect. The high-end 500-up are too much money at present time. Thank-you.

  3. You might consider a used camera from a camera store or friend/relative. The cameras are changing so fast that there are a lot of good ones on the market from those that must have the latest.

Another thought, be sure to check out the cameras at COSTCO.

I'm no photog by any means but a camera with a manual focus may get you a little more detail. Auto focus seems to have trouble for me when up really close. I hate when trying to get pics for evilbay or racingjunk and every single close up I take is blurry!

    Good luck.

Heard lot's of great things about the above mentioned nikon s9100.
    wanting one myself...

  8. I hit it lucky for christmas and got a Canon Powershot 150is .. AND ... a Android X2 phone which has all the functions of the Canon (including video with sound) and just as easy to use .... personally I think digital camera (unless we're talking the 1000 dollar pro models) are going the way of the dinosaur.

    ...... consider getting a decent cellphone/camera.

  9. Go here to see a bunch of cameras in your price range

Lots of good information, reviews and specs on the B&H site. I've dealt with them in the past and have been satisfied. If I were you, I'd save a bit and go for something a little more expensive, you'll like it better in the long run. Get something good up front rather than shopping on price alone and being disappointed in the long run.

  10. Anymore you can get a pretty good chunk of camera in your price range, especially if you're looking at used gear.

If you want to take smapshots, you could go with the cellphone, I guess.

If you want to take photographs, then get a camera. To get really good results, there's still going to be a bit of a learning curve. The camera can do a lot of things automatically. But if you want to do real close-up work you've still got to manually switch the camera into macro mode. And don't worry about getting something with 12 to14 megapixels unless you're going to make really big prints. 5 to 8 megapixel will probably be plenty.

Happy hunting, have fun and get ready for a lot of experimenting. :D

Santa brought me a Nikon P500 which does a nice job of the up close macro, also has the "Holy Cow!! What is the neighbor doing in the hot tub with the maid???" 36X super zoom factor. Watch for prices to drop with the P510 coming out soon

So you are saying the cell phone is your choice between the two? I have a cell that is enough for me to handle. I desire a separate camera. How does the Powershot perform?

You want a camera that can perform "macro photography" it is close up photography , which seems to be what you are trying to accomplish . Check out link below

  14. Yes I would rather use the cell phone than the powershot. I always have it with me and other than the zoom function it works in the same degree as the PS.

I just dont see the need for duplicity ... it would be different if you were after a slr digital or something on the more expensive scale. But just because it works for me it might not work for others.

Heres a simple non-macro shot of your avatar (zoomed) with the Android, taken off my puter screen laptop. I dont even download the pics to my computer just e-mail them to myself

The Android phones are loaded w/spyware. Pass. But if some one out there has a nice digital camera lying dormant.......pm me thank-you for the input folks.

  18. you can't go wrong with a Nikon with a macro lens.

  19. I bought a Fuji which isn't bad, but it autofocuses, and sometimes it's little brain doesn't understand what I'm taking a picture of. It's okay for eBay stuff and stills. I took photos for years with a K1000 though, and I wish I could get a reasonably priced digital with a full manual mode - manual focus, manual shutter speed (up to 1/500th), manual F-stop.
