I picked one of these up at a the swap meet last week. My intention is to use it as an air cleaner for my tri-power. I lifted this pic off the board
All I have is the upper half I am sure this is not a real one but the casting is kinda rough but it should clean up well. anybody have pics of the lower half? I will probaly end up making one from scratch but if I could find one for a fair price, I just might pick it up. Keith

  3. I believe the 'bottom' part was the hood of the car it was put on.

Yep. A bolt on hood scoop. Often added as a pair.

Sorry let me be a bit more clear. I really should not post from my phone.

The pic I showed was lifted from another thread. I am attaching pics of mine that I took this morning. As you can see mine is MUCH shorter that the one in the first pic. mine has lugs cast into it to attach the upper and lower halves together then the whole thing gets mounted to a hood. I did not know that before I bought it I just thought it would make a cool air cleaner. Keith

  7. That didn't have a bottom half, that is the way that it came. Those bosses are for screws to mount it to your hood. We used to run them in pairs.

I would just make a base plate for it and mount it to the carbs. Keep is simple. if you want air cleaners use 3 open elements on top of the base plate.

There is no "bottom part" in the first picture. As the guys have said, they bolted to the hood, and holes were cut (or not) ad the installation was complete. They were advertised heavily in all of the late sixties magazines by several companies. I do like your idea for an air cleaner with it, though.

The bottom part he is talking about is the mouth of the opening. In the first pic you can see a full cir***ferenced part in the mouth. His is missing the lower half of the mouth.

Scott what you are showing on your YJ is what I showed in the first pic. That is not what I have mine is similar to yours if you slice it on a horizontal plane midway thru the "mouth"

Mine is marked Cal-Custom 10-20. I may (most likley) have got the name wrong, I got it from a quick search online. I'm pretty sure it is not a real Cal-Custom, as it is very clean, and in "as cast" condition. I'm guessing somebody had a real one and they got into home sand casting. Keith

Look closer, the front part of the scoop on the one he has doesn't have a bottom half to it. The front opening is only half way around.

It's the same scoop........either the bottom was cut off or someone did a home casting/copy of their Cal Custom original. I'd lean towards the home casting, notice the mounting holes arent drilled and tapped, Cal Custom didnt sell them that way. I just sold my NOS in the box set of Panthers last Spring or I'd get some detail shots for you.

It keeps getting more and more interesting! For what it is worth, I do think it could make a cool air breather!

I just ran across this thread... I happen to have a pair of these that my dad kept off an old Nova he worked on back in the day. I've always loved them! Someday they're gonna get used... Just waiting for the "right" project! :D

I've seen those on a few V8 powered boats years ago. Usually on the engine cover as add on goodies.
