i need help. i have got my f-1 running. small block chevy, thumper cam and gear drive,( imight regret the gear drive later), 5 -speed, a driver. i cant make up my mind on mufflers. i have some flowmasters, but am leaning toward smithys, because this is a driver, not a trailer queen. also has any one tryed the new cherry bombs made for early style hot rods? your thoughts, thanks, mark

I use Turbo Thrush mufflers on everything I build because I like the tone at low speeds and the fact that I can hear myself think without interior resonation while going down the road.

I have a pair of Thrush welded mufflers on my Dailey. Sound awesome. Mellowed than Flowmasters. Jdubbya's truck has Powerstick mufflers with a Thump'r cammed SHC. Search it on YouTube. Sounds incredible but is totally drivable.
But, I'm sure the Cherry Bomb guy will chime in and tell us how awesome gl*** packs are even though they sound like ***.

What do you want outta the thing? If you want it LOUD and BOLD, put the new Cherry Bomb Extreme on it. They are a tiny one chamber single baffle "muffler".

You will like the Smithy's if it's a driver. Not too loud when cruising, but a good bark when you get on it!

If you want a wicked cool traditional sound, there is only one choice: PORTERS. They ROCK!! And they get better with age.

Depends on the sound you want, magnaflow has a nice rumble and I believe they offer toned down versions as well

Well since Flathead Pete has begged for my input! I would actually suggest using the VORTEX muffler and not a gl*** pack. VORTEX has minimal cruising drone inside, but a nice deep tone out the back. It also out flows all of our chambered mufflers and doesn't sound like a tin can

This always comes up, and is kinda like asking how you should comb your hair.

It's really a personal preference, and your best bet would be to ask some folks who's exhaust you like the sound of, and note that pipe diameter and muffler placement have a significant impact on sound, too.

i have a gear drive in my 56(pic in avatar) with cherry bombs on it. the gear drive is louder than the exhaust. i really regret putting the gear drive in and can't wait to take it out when i get the time to work on my car again.

I run Smithys on my F100 really like the tone and they are good for daily use.

  19. DynoMax on the '62 Galaxie, smooth mellow sound with a little deep rumble, excellent!

I run Smithy's on my Beefed up 283 sbc with full 2 1/2" exhaust out of 2 1/2" Rams Horns. They have a nice lower rumble, not the crackly older style.
Sound real close to the Flow Masters too.
Here is a video I took in response to a similar post last week.
First video I have ever done, so not perfect but will give you an idea.
    Cheers.......

I've run magnaflow's on lots of cars. I like them since they are mellow and low town. i *LOTHE* the sound of a flowmaster. besides not being very efficient at the flow aspect, i hate the sound of them.

Magnaflows are stainless, and the packing doesnt fall out of them either. i have run V8's with headers and 2.5" to a universal MF muffler- dual 2.5"/single 3"out and had great tones and good flow with it.

i have 4" MF's on my turbo 6 cyl- tryin to keep it street sleeper quiet :)

I'm a Porter guy myself. Be sure to head over to youtube and listen to videos of other exhaust.
