I am pulling the 352 out of my Galaxie to replace freeze plugs, fix intake manifold leak, clean and paint it. Any suggestions on anything else I should do while it's out?
Clean and paint the engine compartment. Fix any other leaks if necessary. If it is an automatic, check front seal and pump and replace if necessary.
Don't forget the freeze plugs on the back of the block, covered by the flex plate, which means the ****** would have to come off, but just like Roadsterpu said, I would surely be checking the trans front seal / pump anyway. Might be a good time to pull oil pan and ****** pan and just check it out. Also check exhaust manifold gaskets. If they need to be replaced, now would be the time to do so because the exhaust manifold bolts seem to always break, and its a ***** to remove a broken stud with the engine in the car. Check engine mounts for deterioration, as well as water pump for seepage, and front cover for leaks. BOutlaw
Good time to clean up the engine bay. Also valve cover and oil pan gaskets if leaking. Also with the engine out, good time to blow out the radiator fins and flush out.
Thanks for the replys, will be taking all the advice posted. Start dismantling the engine from the body this week, after work of course.
fe's dont have freeze plugs on the back of the block. an oil pump and a hardened oil pump shaft, a timing chain would be my first thoughts. never a bad idea with an fe to pull the rocker arm ***emblies apart and clean out all the **** that collects in the shafts too.
Ok, so now my to do list includes Freeze plugs, intake and exhaust gaskets, Timing chain, rear main engine seal, Clean out rocker arm shafts, clean and paint engine and engine bay, check transmission front seal and pump, check oil pan and ****** pan and oil pump, Whew gunna be a busy winter.
I finally got to pull my engine out last Saturday. I decided to pull the ****** as well. Only casualties was a broken distributor cap and we sawzalled the exhaust pipes off just below the headers. Now I Need a warm day so I can pressure wash them. Only one picture was good, all the others came out blurry. It's me underneath getting the starter out.
Tore down the engine and everything was suprisingly clean for a 64. No sludge or "lava rocks", and cylinder walls look nice and smooth. There was some minor tears on the splash plate where the pushrods go through. Anyone know what may have caused this? I tried to post pictures but got a message saying upload failed.
