Flames and pinstriping on just about anything. Scallops, not so much...

  7. Flames on hot rods and scallops on customs. The only exceptions are the So-Cal cars and Sam Hollingsworth's Nomad.:D
    Striping on everything.

  8. Not where I lived. They were used to make a styling statement and the bodywork was straight first.

When I got my ot el camino, it was all in primer. Had to make it mine of course, and sooner is always better. So added the black primer scallops (hey, it's primer!) and 1/8 in pinstripe tape. Took a Saturday to do. Now running the S-10 rims w/rings. This thing was just too square for flames IMHO, but as an 83, the scallops do seem to go with it correctly, even for a late model. (btw, once I have everything else redone, I WILL paint it)

Sorry to disagree but I believe old cars should look like old cars. I'm just not into flames and scallops. Also not into supposed hot rods that look nothing like the car they are supposed to represent. Examples are the glass 33 Ford Speedstar, Coast to Coast 39 Ford and the greatest abomination of all the 39 Studebaker pick up.

No offense taken doughh. If we all liked the same thing, there would only be one make/model vehicle available, and one paint color.

  13. I couldnt agree more, there was a 55 at the Austin Speed Shop that had both also and I loved it !

Too many times I think that the wrong flames are put on a car. Its rare you see it done right. I love to see scallops because I dont see them that often. Pin-striping Is an amazing art form. To watch somebody do it is an amazing process and requires a great imagination and skill. just my .25 Pesos.

If you are going to do flames PLEASE! PLEASE!! have pro (usually a good pinstriper) lay them out, just because a guy knows how to paint cars doesn't mean he knows how to do flames. For every 1 good flame job there are 9 bad really bad ones. Any flames, except ghost flames, should be pinstriped outlined by a pro. If the flames are on the front to doors, I think it is okay to have a smiple striping design on the trunk in color matching the flames and their outline. Just my 2 cents!

I say if you can use a brush or a gun... Do what makes you happy but make it your own!

And I think we can all agree that the clam tops them all.

We went with the flames and stars....it was a compromise. The stars are a candy color and really pops at night. We have received a lot of good comments and she has been selected for to represent our track best appearing on two occasions. Airbrushed skulls and gears seem to always get the big prize until this year. A girl from our track with realtree cammo in pink won the overall.

I will try to find a close up but the flames are pinstriped in blue.

Certain years look good with certain things. Pinstriping looks good on any, scallops on any pre60, flames never on 60s cars

I like flames and scallops. I think different cars pull off different looks. One 50 Chevy might look good in flames and another one terrible. Depends on the overall build of the rest of the car as to what fits. Wheels, tires, trim, it all has to flow or it just doesn't fit.

I guess whatever trips your trigger, but when it comes to flames, I strongly prefer multi-colored, more traditional, blended flames rather than one solid color. Kinda like my old fxlr:

Subtle ghost crab claw flames yes. Scallops another yes but not too many or too big and striping a big yes. Less is best and you know what they say about pinstriping...........................

I like it all. More if you can put all 3 in and make it look good.

Here's some amature doodles of flames turning into scallops and scallops turning into flames. Top left, top right, and bottom right.
