Will a 12V starter from a 55 235 fit on a 52 216? I'd love to convert the car to 12volt and am wondering if the 12V starter from a later 235 will fit a 216 or if it can be converted to fit by swapping in parts from the original 216 starter (ie: gear/bendix drive etc..) thanks in advance for any tips on this.....
Yep thats what I've heard too, just have a chance at a 12V out of a 55 235 for cheap so figured I'd see if it would work. I know a 6V starter will work on 12V, just spins faster but have also heard it will shorten the life of the unit, what about the 6V solenoid, do you need to swap that out or can you just leave the whole unit in place and thats it...
I think I heard that all you have to do is swap the solenoid to 12v. I would like to know also, I will be converting the 216 in my '50 chevy over as soon as I go back up to Paso to get the car.
the deal is that the 6v starter and flywheel have coarse tooth gears, while the 12v starter and flywheel have fine tooth gears. And the shafts inthe starter are different sizes, so you can't change the drive gear out. So if you want to use a 12v starter you need to change the flywheel.
Thats what I was wondering was the flywheel teeth question. Now do you need to put a 12V solenoid on your 6V starter, and will it fit? Just wondering what do the Chevy parts places do to sell you a 12 V starter for the 12V swap, do they rewind the 6V armature for 12V? Guess I'm trying to do the 12V swap as cheap as possible and still have it work! Ted
when we did gear jammer's 31 with an aluminum GMC 6v flywheel, we needed to get a 6v starter, and it's a 12v car now so we wound up adapting the 12v solenoid to the starter--it's not a bolt on. And it grinds every now and then, for some unknown reason. Try the 6v solenoid, it should work for a while at least....
