This is a two part question, so read up. First... I'm looking for a decent low-buck paint shop to paint a daily. Need something with Maaco's price, but better quality. Nothing showroom, just nothing bad. If anyone can refer me to someone or someplace that has a quick turnaround, that'd be great. I'm planning to sell my truck and get a new daily that needs a quick and clean paint job. Quick meaning I don't wanna drive around in the '54 for two weeks in this heat while the new daily gets a coat of paint. Second... Where in the hell is everyone? There are so many HAMBers from this area I figured you guys would all meet up on the weekends or something and shoot the ****. Ok later. Thanks.
I'll take a stab at this..... 1.) I have heard that Maaco on N. Lamar is a good place to take a car for paint. I know you say you want a Maaco price but not their quality, but a guy here at work has a bunch of modern cars he has had painted by them, they all turned out very nice. Has to be the North Lamar one though. 2.) Good question. I moved here 18 months ago and Im still wondering where everyone is.Maybe it isnt a social here as I thought it was or maybe you need to be part of an inner circle, dont know...good question though
Have you checked out 1431 in Cedarpark or the Y in Oak hill on saturday nights? There is also Thristy Thursdays in Taylor.
I'm up for a get together, cruise, whatever...like to meet some of the locals. I've met one or two but that's about it. I'm probably good for this friday... Can't help ya on the painting, if you find a good one let me know, need my burned hood fixed and painted. oh yeah, welcome to Austin...sooooo much better than Corpus! blech...
Just a general statement. Most of those Maaco type places can put a nice paint job on, IF you do the prep work. They spray all day long, so they are pretty good at it. Where they get cheap is in the preparation, and a good paint job is mostly prep. You can take the time to remove all the bumpers, trim, lights, etc. Do the block sanding yourself and get it smooth. Save yourself money and also get a better final result. The paint those shops use is bought in bulk in 55 gal drums and is acylic enamel. If you want better paint then you can ask and they usually can provide for extra fee. I had a friend back in my drag racing days with a similar shop, he could do nice work if they took the time for prep. Most people do not want to spend the money for the prep. Labor is cost. They just want a shiny car. His shop did about 8-10 cars per day!! It was like an ***embly line. Yes he made a lot of money as well, still painting a car for cheap.
Good question. We meet at Flyrite every 1st Friday. Usually a bunch of us are working on cars on Saturday or Sunday too. Sometimes we even get together and go to the lake. All this stuff is figured out on our 1st Fridays though....
Once I get settled, I'll organize some reliabililty runs and what not... I like to get out and drive em though - I can't stand sitting in parking lots...
I like laying in parking lots and just about any place else, nightclub dancefloors, the supermarket, pool tables, dirty motels, you name any flat surface and I can bet you I've layed on it. When I was coming back from VLV I took a detour through the country roads west of Austin it was one beautiful ride. We went through some little German town and there was a big lake or something, I can't remember the names though. Looked like a great drive for a reliability run.
Driving is good. I'm working on a project out in Llano and took the back roads back into town, ended up on 1431? around the north side of lake travis...very curvy up and down fun. Would be a good cruise out to marble falls or something...grab some food and beers... bryan
Maaco's have always done me good, do all the preps, remove everything you can that don't need paint, go talk to the painter and slip him or her a folded $20.00 in a handshake.
I didn't know you listened to Widespread Panic! Gnarly, bra; we'll have to hacky and share a joint at the next show...
I heard the same on the Maaco on N Lamar, but agree you should do the prep work. As for the meets, 1431 is a hit and miss. Sometimes the place is full of ricers and wannabee's other times nice old rods and sweet muscle cars, if you're into that scene. Work keeps me busy every other weekend, so i don't make it out there all the time. My other free time is used on collecting parts for the 48, so I guess i will be posing for a while. As for the hippies.....man don't get me started. It took me several days last time to deal with the voices in my head telling me to clean my guns and confirm their zero.
Maybe I'll swing by the Maaco on N. Lamar. The car is prepped and practically ready to spray. As for hippies...man I been here only two weeks and I've cleaned my ****nal of rifles and pistolas about 6 times.
You, or any other HAMBers, inc you Ryan, are welcome to come by Thirsty Thursday in Taylor, probably 30 minute drive for you Austin guys. Thunderbolts & whomever else shows up every Thursday night. Plan our weekend mischief. I usually get there about 7PM as I am about 45 miles east of there. If I am not there ask for Billy, introduce yourself, tell him you are a HAMB friend of Eddie. Bring your own beer, usually room in Billy's shop fridge. Sometimes there are a bunch of hot rods, sometime not. Never know who or what will show up. Billy's place is always on Reggie's Roundup shop tour. Worth the trip just to see all of Merkord's cool ****! Place is like a hot rod museum. Several cars in progress being built. Or at least have the appearance of works in progress. PM me for directions if you wanna come by.
I've always thought the same thing fro all the car guys around here no one really goes out since they shut down the cruize night in Round Rock. San Antonio has cruise nights ( it seems every where ). If you figure something out Just let me know I'll try to go. As for all the bums and hippies thats why I moved.
you calling me a bum? you hippybillie rocker that listens to DR.DRE ? seems that everytime people want to get together, the boss says I have to work
I have something for y'all, come on down to the Continental club on Sat. the 2nd of July for High Noon. July 8th in store at cheapo records with The Horton Brothers, The Two Timin' Three, and me. First Fridays at Flyrite Rock. Jason, Marty, Ken and the boys are great hosts. ****s I haven't made it to one since march busy busy. Thirsty Thursday at Billys place is the best! That is if you LIKE being surrounded by rare hot rod parts cool cars and a great bunch of guys. Again it ****s but I havent made it out there in a year! Ryan organizing some runs and stuff will be great! We're all so busy I've only seen Ryan once since he got here. Only advice I have for guys looking to do something in Austin is. Go do something. ****, there's too much to do here. Maybe that's why this "where is everyone thread pops up every few months. I'd love to make every cruise every weekend but... lets see, I work a 40 hour week for the man, then I have to cram in band rehearsals, time with the wife, Time to mow the lawn fix the sink etc... Most weekends I'm gigging. After that I get some time to work on my hot rods, and then maybe I can go do some other car stuff.
Hey TX Hard Core....High School Caesar's a comin' to A town on Friday the 1st at the Continental with the Derailers and then Saturday, FRIGGIN' HIGH NOON baby! ShweeeeT!
Hell, you dont need to bring ANY beer!!! Everytime I've been there, the fridge was stocked full of BudLight, and cases were sitting on the floor waiting to be stocked.... Oh wait...maybe the cases were filled with empty bottles, I dont know, I was preoccupied with the Burritos being cooked on the bar-B-que.
